What we do is secret...

i think i'm starting to get a bit sick. the weather has messed with me these past few days and now i'm beginning to feel the effects on my body. my throat is getting sore and my head heavy. my nose is running and i'm sneezing all the time. ugh, when i get sick I GET SICK!!! i guess it's some sort of germ or germs in general...

yeah, that pun was intentional. today's artist is the old school punk band The Germs.

this group was the american answer to the Sex Pistols, or at least that's what some people say. this is the story of awfulness. these people could not play worth a flip and their live shows would just be terrible and usually end up being shut down. they were banned from almost all the california venues were they lived, and it also didn't help that the drug habits for some members were dangerous.

the band was led by singer darby crash; a poet and junkie, who sang with ferocious, spastic, spits, and lived a punk rock rawness lifestyle that many would not dare to try.

the germs formed in los angeles, california in 1977 and broke up in 1980 after darby committed suicide. sadly, that wouldn't stop the band from reforming in 2006 and 2008. darby was one of punks best front men despite his lifestyle. the guy could command the crowd and show off the attitude and spirit of punk. look for the penelope spheeris documentary, The Decline of Western Civilization. in this film, she follows the live performances of such notable punk acts like, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, X, Fear, and of course, The Germs. for most people, this would be the only way to see the germs in a live setting since their latter shows become scarce because of their reputation.

this band is also famous for having other members who went on to be in much more notable acts. for a short time, the germs had "dottie danger" better known as, belinda carlisle, who went on to front the all female pop punk band, The Go Go's. also, there was pat smear, lead guitarist, who went on to play in Nirvana during the bands final year, and also The Foo Fighters during their early and best years. drummer don bolles and bassist lorna doom rounded out the rest of the germs.

oh, and about those reunion gigs from the 2000's. well you can talk to pat smear about that. for most fans, it's sacred ground to try and fill in darby crash's spot as the singer for the germs. you just can't do it. well, that didn't stop the rest of the original band from doing just that. in 2005, the bio pic, What We Do is Secret, was filmed with actor, shane west, playing as darby. yeah, that dude from A Walk To Remember played darby. well, the band got the idea to try this out in the live setting, so they took shane with them and played live shows across america, most notably on the vans warped tour. take this for what you think of it, because i don't plan on seeing them any time soon. no, i'm not a music snob here, but i really have no desire to see this. oh, and one more thing to mention. the band recently signed with billy corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins own indie record label. so there...

for the music i have one album for you to check out. it's called, (MIA) The Complete Anthology. this is the total amount of germs material out there, minus the live bootlegs scattered about. this is top notch early american punk rock music. dig this and enjoy the sick feeling you are gonna get!!!
