I'll Decline...

it's going to be a cold week here in oklahoma. the temperature is supposed to drop to about 6 degrees on either thursday or friday. i know where i'll be during this time. (my room...) starting last night and ending today, i've been watching Lost season five. i had forgotten how awesome this show was. it's addicting and once you finish an episode you got to watch another. too bad it's a short season (16 episodes) compared to the previous ones. still, it's getting me pumped for the sixth and final season of the show. it's good to wrap things up on something this great before it becomes stale and boring. the writers on this show are freekin' crazy when it comes to plot twists and devices. once an idea is met, another turn happens. it drives me crazy!!! but it also makes me more interested. ha ha

going back to around 2003 or so, i got into the hardcore/metalcore scene really heavy. i went to many shows and did all the ninja moves in the pit. i haven't really gone to any of these types of shows in a long time though. they became violent and retarded. the music was already becoming watered down and the serious lack of creative imagination was draining my interest. but there was a time during all of this when i discovered many great bands that i still love today. this was one of them. From Autumn To Ashes. the only band my mother liked because of their name...

today, this type of music has become a shadow of it's former self. the lines between hardcore and metal are very blurred. "metalcore" as it has been called, used to be something fresh and new in the underground. yes, it dates back to the 80's with bands like Agnostic Front and Corrosion of Conformity, but still it was pretty huge in the early 2000's. big festivals like Warped Tour, Ozzfest, and Sounds of the Underground helped usher in this style and shortly after that everybody and their dog started metalcore bands. now i'm not just heaving all this metalcore junk on top of the band i'm mentioning today, no. but back then, they did a great mix and emo/screamo and metalcore influences and helped define the genres.

from autumn to ashes formed in 2000 in long island, new york. they played many diy shows and got the buzz goin' for them by releasing a demo and distributing it to as many records labels as they could. eventually this would land them with the ferret music label based out of new jersey and history was made. the band released one album on the label before moving to vagrant records where they stayed until they broke up which was in 2008.

here today, you will find their entire discography. first we have the demo ep titled Sin, Sorrow and Sadness then next we have the excellent debut lp titled Too Bad You're Beautiful. following in third is the second lp and many people's favorite titled The Fiction We Live and after that is their third lp titled Abandon Your Friends. take note that this was the last album with lead screamer benjamin perri. after this album he quit and soft singer and drummer, francis mark took over for lead vocals. this all leads to their final studio lp titled Holding a Wolf by the Ears. francis mark really shines here as the lead vocalist. he can do the soft singing and screaming really nicely which makes one wonder why he didn't in the first place. you can tell all this by jamming the last album here which is called Live at Looney Tunes. this was from autumn to ashes last official release and it's sort of a swan song. it's also one of the best live recordings i've ever heard for this type of music. so with that get into it and enjoy!!!

The tears suspend
smiles are not more than (empty love)
locked doors can keep you alone
forever paint words (from your lips)
in a house that's no longer your home
take the dreams I know (as my own)
and it worsens weekends
thanks again for my misery
and you run with fake friends
I'm sick of your sad songs and sing alongs
I kind of like it when things are wrong

straight from left end
they'll shout corrections
and I'll decline and I'll decline
a source of comfort and some protection
and I'll decline

smiles are not more than (empty love)
locked doors can keep you alone
forever paint words (from your lips)
in a house that's no longer your home
take the dreams I know (as my own)
and it worsens weekends
thanks again for my misery
and you run with fake friends

straight from left end
they'll shout corrections
and I'll decline and I'll decline
a source of comfort and some protection
and I'll decline

in your throat you will see
surface relocated therapy
all I taste today
is the shame (of) my whore pretty
all I know is apologies
do you feel the shame?
