i just got back from ada, oklahoma. it seems i'm going to adding a little bit more to my daily routine of medication and such. hmm, well i guess it's for the best. i really don't like trying new medicines because i don't know how my body will react to them, but i'm willing if it will help me get through the tough time i usually have everyday of my life, with a terrible condition that won't seem to go away no matter how hard i try to be rid of it and with that, what's the deal with the tacos at taco bell because when you order them they only put so much meat in those suckers and you spent close to five dollars for just two or three of them and it isn't that much at all to eat and also, why does the soda always seem watered down and why can't the heat just turn itself low a little bit and let us live in a daily temperature of around 77 degrees and yeah, so what's up with you and yours huh, because i'm a bit lonely and i really haven't anything to do except post these rants and try my best to make you all listen to good music, oh why won't my dream to one day discover bigfoot come true and why can't we discover cures for cancer and aids and why oh why does our government not let leonard peltier out of prison and hopefully the lakers will lose big time and lastly, why can't we have a dairy queen close by instead of having to drive all the way to chickasha to get a dang blizzard...
on this blog it's my goal to bring you music i love, and hopefully you will too, and it's also sometimes awesome to mention new and upcoming bands that are hitting the waves and doing good things with their talent. today is one such band that i have been taking a keen look at, and thusly, have decided to post on. this band is known as The Drums and they are going to be HUGE.
ladies and gentlemen, i present your new addiction. like all the quirky indie bands before them, (see: The Strokes, Vampire Weekend, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Passion Pit, Tokyo Police Club, Tapes n' Tapes, Ra Ra Riot, MGMT, Crystal Castles, and basically whatever pitchfork is hyping that week and next...) the drums are the next big thing in rock. this is something for all the hipsters to drool over and then hate a minute later. this is something to be seen on david letterman, or leno, and then despised because it's bigger than what it is. this is something to hear on commercials selling trendy shirts and pants, or the opening credits to a michael cera movie. this is something to like and leave it at that.
am i hating on this band in particular??? yeah, just a little bit. but of course i'm trying to get all that non-sense type of over saturated young adult "smarter than you" BS out of my system before everyone else does. (ha ha i'm trendy by beating you at being trendy!!!) ugh, when did music become this sort of abomination that requires you to do deep soul searching over the politics of whether or not to like or dislike??? it should be a matter of taste and not the opinion of others, but, sadly, that is not usually the case in today's world of the quickness to the snail pace.
the drums are a young band from brooklyn, new york that started in 2008 after the breakup of lead singer jonathan pierce's previous group, Elkand, who were originally called, Goat Explosion. rounding out the rest of the band is former goat explosion guitarist, jacob grahm, former elkland guitarist adam kessler and drummer connor hanwick. to describe the sound of the drums i guess, is something like this: try Joy Division, mixed with The Beach Boys, sprinkled with bits of The Cure, then slightly peppered with The Smiths, then fully baked and accompanied with a nice glass of Orange Juice. yeah, the drums are a total mix of old school post-punk and indie pop. (watch their live videos on youtube to see jonathan do his best Ian Curtis impersonation...) there is a strong 60's surf rock vibe as well as some of that Phil Spector "wall of sound" style. it's a huge mess, but darnit', it freekin' works!!! take the song, "let's go surfing" from their Summertime! ep. it's got all the right moves to be a humongous hit this year, just like "a-punk" by vampire weekend was a few years back.
so, did you pay attention to that little number hmm??? it's so addicting, that if their music was crack or meth, addicts would be stealing the copper from under your house just to buy the 99¢ mp3 off itunes. let's go surfing is your new addiction!!! you can't just hear it once, nor twice for that matter...
so, we finally come to the music. since they are new, there is only a few things to try out, but that's good. sometimes there can be too much of a good thing. yeah, so first off is the wonderful Summertime! ep followed by their self titled debut. some of their early and best songs like, "submarine" and "i felt stupid" from the ep are left off the full length, so be sure to get both of these. enjoy!!!
