I saw rain a' floodin'...

oklahoma has been dealt with all sorts of problems throughout it's history. natural disasters happen to be the most prolific. today was the third time this past week for flooding and i believe it hit the hardest on this occasion. water rose to waist deep and many cars were abandoned due to stalling out. the water was a murky mud red color and it flowed faster than most people predicted. a few days ago a young teenager was swept down a river and supposedly drowned. (his body has yet to be located...) i would have taken pictures of today's event, but i was stuck at my grandma's while the waters were at their highest. i didn't get home till after 8pm. so even though oklahoma has been through some of the worst ordeals in united states history, we are still here. there is a certain familiarity about everyone here that speaks of how strong we are. i believe it's because of our faith. there is a reason our state is called the heartland, or the bible belt. we are contantly put to the test...

let's make things a little more chipper with some music by the Violent Femmes.



the violent femmes were one of the first folk-punk acts in america. the band garnered a style that mixed post-punk with folk to make something totally unique and "alternative" to the mainstream music of the time. they hailed from milwaukee, wisconsin and existed from 1980 to 2009. the group performed as a trio with lead singer and guitarist gordan gano, bassist brian ritchie and drummer victor delorenzo who was later replaced by guy hoffman. they also added extra musicians to help during live performances.

the band often played at coffee houses and street corners to make money. they were discovered by james honeyman-scott of The Pretenders while busking outside the venue they were playing at. lead singer chrissie hynde asked them to play an acoustic set after the opening band on that nights pretenders show. the band then signed to independent label, Slash records and released their self titled debut in 1982. and the rest is in the books from there on out.

so, for the music we have that self titled debut. it's a great album that contains some of their most cherished songs like, "blister in the sun" add it up" and "gone daddy gone". this is a great little summer jam as well as something to lift up your spirits. try it out and see if you can't dig it...
