Last Dinosaur...

sorry i've missed the last couple of days for bloggin'. it's been a busy time at the moment. despite that, i still want to write on here as much as possible. last night i went to a hardcore punk show and saw Ceremony and Punch tear up oklahoma city. it was a blast and i think i sweated off at least five pounds or more!!! i haven't been to a good hardcore show like that in years, so it was worth the wait. in other music news, i recently purchased my ticket for the New Found Glory show at the conservatory on september 11th. this will be EPIC!!! (i'm geekin' out right now...)

for the music i'm posting some serious nerd stuff. well, it's not really nerdy, but some might think so. anyway, the music is from a band called, The Pillows.

the pillows are a pop/rock/punk band from hokkaidō, japan that have been together since 1989. in total, they have released 16 records and several ep's. they gained an american audience when their music was used for the anime, Fooly Cooly, or FlCl, or Furi Kuri. this is where the nerdom comes in. if it wasn't for this, i never would have heard of these guys. what hit me when i first watched this particular show was the music. sure, the animation is simple, yet gorgeous, and yes, the plot is all over the place and spastic, but awesome like that. and yeah, it's done by gainax who were responsible for making the timeless, Neon Genesis Evangelion. but still, it was the music that struck me. i haven't witnessed an awesome soundtrack to just about anything since Cowboy Bebop. i had to quickly dig around and find this source, which ultimately led me to the pillows.

for today the three soundtracks to fooly cooly are here. they feature mainly music by the pillows, but also instrumental tracks by other artists as well as spoken dialogue from the anime itself. the first volume is called, Addict and the second is called, King of Pirates. the third is simply called volume three. try these out and enjoy something a bit different!!! dig it...

All is full of...

today was a better day, but i'm still feeling a bit bad. i'm also very tired and hungry. maybe i'll check out the new jack n' the box they opened down the road. anyway, today is wednesday so that means new Top Chef tonight!!! (i have things to look forward to despite how i currently feel...)

i wanted to be a little artsy with today's post. not saying its art school junk or whatever, but today's artist is considered avant-garde and highly unique. i'm talking about the glory that is, Björk.

björk guðmundsdóttir, or better know simply as, björk, is an icelandic singer/songwriter who has been in the music industry since her debut solo album in 1977. she has been nominated for both, grammy and academy awards, and has one several of them. once she dropped her self titled debut, she joined the post-punk band, Tappi Tíkarrass in 1981, left them and then joined The Sugarcubes in 1986, who were also post-punk, but with a more nu-wave/gothic type of style. in 1992 the sugarcubes broke up and björk pursued her solo career, releasing her second album, Debut in 1993. the album became an instant hit in the alternative music world with such songs as, "human behavior" "venus as a boy" and "big time sensuality". this was trumped by her next album called, Post, which became an ultimate smash hit. it even has a spot in the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums Ever Made issue, ranking in at number 373.

in 2007 i got the chance to see björk play at that year's Coachella Music Festival. it was an awesome moment for sure, but i got a text from my buddies telling me to get to the small tent to watch Gogol Bordello. to this day i don't regret doing that. björk is cool to see live, but i'd much rather witness her spectacle in something smaller than a huge outdoor festival. (imho of course!!!)

for her music we have three albums. first is the album, Debut which wasn't really her debut, then after that is the incredible album, Post. and in last place is the album, Homogenic. these three are my personal faves and each one is in order by release. oh, and the video for "all is full of love" was directed by Chris Cunningham who is a genius. enjoy!!!

Breathe with me...

today was tough at work. not that my job is really difficult, but instead it's my own personal self that was causing the damage. i'm really disappointed for reasons i'll leave off of here. hopefully tomorrow will be a better day. i don't want to screw up something that's good, including my personal and professional life...

i want to let out some steam, so here's some dangerous electronica from The Prodigy.

the prodigy is an electronic/breakbeat group that started in 1990 and continue to be a large presence in the dance world today. they hail from braintree, essex and are known for their intense live shows and memorable songs. their style of techno dabbles in many sub-genre's of electronica and it's hard to pin point an exact definition of their tastes. this is some serious 90's nostalgia right here, but gosh, it's still amazing to hear. the music of the prodigy can be heard almost anywhere. it's become the sort of "go to" for moments of excitement and sometimes brutality. (Blade movies, Matrix movies, sports movies...) despite that, the music can stand alone as some of the best to come out of the 90's rave culture and i'm all glad for it.

today i'm posting their most well known album called, The Fat of the Land. this was EPIC when it first dropped back in 1997. hit songs like, "firestarter" "breathe" "smack my bitch up" "mindfields" and "serial thrilla" have stood the test of yadda yadda yadda and continue to be set list mega hits when played live. the controversial music video for "smack my bitch up" is in my top ten favorite music videos of all time and is down below in all its uncut glory. it's just gnarly, brutal and unique which is something music video's need to do more often. so capping off this downer of a day, you have the opportunity to jam an almost perfect album and one of my favorites from the 90's. dig it once more...

Ghost rider, ghost rider...

Well, just to let you all know, i had a good weekend. i actually danced last night and it was good fun. standing around waiting all night was a bit tough, but i need to get used to the weight of my outfit, so i gave in and stood my ground, sweating like rain and hitting mosquitoes. the women had their contests all night, so we men didn't get to bust out that much until the end, which was close to midnight. (typical here in oklahoma...) the song was northern style and only lasted two times through. at the end i felt like i was carrying 500 pounds!!! heh heh so i guess that means i need to get in shape...

for some reason i feel like posting some more old school proto-punk from the 70's again. don't let the name bother you, or make you think i'm hurting in some way. it's just their turn to be mentioned on this blog. so anyway, here's Suicide.

a very influential band from late 70's new york punk, suicide were one of, if not, the very first synth pop/punk bands to hit the scene. you could probably say they almost invented the style. the band consists of just two members who are, alan vega and martin rev. alan does vocals with a soft, yet serious demeanor and martin plugs along with his hypnotizing riffs and manic beats. the music they create is deep in punk rawness, but also in other genre's like indie/pop/nu-wave and even some more obscure areas like no-wave and industrial. the duo have been playing live since 1971 and don't seem to ever stop. their music is covered by many bands today and you can hear their influence in artists like The Horrors, Soft Cell, The Sisters of Mercy, Big Black, Loop, Liars, Ex Models, and even the mighty Joy Division.

for today you will find their 1977 self titled debut. this little album is ranked at number 446 in The Rolling Stone Top 500 Greatest Albums Ever Made issue and stands as one of the best to come from that early era of punk music. dig it...

We are the heathens...

i'm a little sore, but that's alright. i somehow have a bruise on my left shoulder, but that's alright. i got to dance last night, but not that much and that's alright. today is comic con 2010 and i'm not there, but that's alright. i think i'm beginning to become lactose intolerant, and that's not alright. my stomach hurts a bit, but that's alright. it's hot here in oklahoma, but that's alright. i'm still tired my from my first full week of work, but that's alright. my cat likes to eat my powwow feathers, but he's a cat, so that's alright. Independence Day was just on tv and it's a terrible movie, but that's alright. last night i saw my good friend april and she's back home helping her family, so that's alright. i often think of my personal life and it leaves me even more confused, but that's alright. Major Pain is on on tv now and it stars marlon waynes and it's kind of alright. at least it's not In the Army Now with pauly shore, so that's alright. my dog is sleeping next to me and he's happy, so that's alright. one more, or possibly two more days of indian hills for me and i'm alright.

a little more easy today kids. here's some 90's emo courtesy of The Van Pelt.

the van pelt were an indie/emo band from new york city that formed in 1993 and lasted until 1997 with a brief two show reunion in 2009. the band consisted of former members from the bands Native Nod and Blonde Redhead. after their breakup, some members went on to bands like Jets To Brazil, Enon and The Lapse. for me, what makes this band stand out amongst all the other 90's acts out there was the unique vocal approach. lead singer chris leo had a more spoken word style of singing rather than your normal style. you might have heard this used by craig finn from The Hold Steady. also adding to the overall atmosphere is the music created by the players here. if you like the soft styles of perhaps, American Football, Bells on Trike, Built to Spill and the uptempo shifts of Sonic Youth this might be for you.

so for the music you will find their two full length albums minus the three hard to find split albums. first is the, Stealing From Our Favorite Thieves and second is my personal favorite, Sultans of Sentiment. try these out and enjoy!!!

Indian Hillzzz...

the weekend is almost here and with that comes my favorite powwow of the summer, indian hills. this is the ultimate outdoor event for me and this year is a special one because it will be the first time i've dance there. yep, since my outfit is pretty much done, i finally get to dance at my favorite summer powwow ever!!! i'm so nervous, yet totally excited!!! i'm going to bed way early tonight in order to wake up around 5:30 am and get to work by 7. if i do that then i can be off by 4pm and thus, have time to get home and shower up and then head over to the dance. it's gonna be zoppity!!!

since i'm about to be in slumber, let's listen to some lo-fi dreamy stuff courtesy of Swirlies.

swirlies are a shoegaze/lo-fi/indie/rock band from boston, massachusetts that have been around since 1990. often compared to bands like, My Bloody Valentine, Pavement, Sonic Youth, Slowdive, Ride and Galaxy 500, swirlies carved their own trail and garnered a deep fan base in the independent music scenes around the world. though the original lineup isn't really together at this time, the current incarnation still rocks and often leave the audience in a daze. give this a shot if you are open minded, which i hope you all are!!!

oh, and for the music here's my favorite album by swirlies called, Blonder Tongue Audio Baton. this is probably their most recognized work as it's their personal best. if you love loud, distorted shoegaze that erupts with screeching highs and soft, quiet epic lows then you are in for a real treat!!! dig it...

Hail to the chef...

Top Chef has started once again and tonight is another new episode. i've also been getting into a new show that comes on after called, Work of Art: The Next Great Artist. i like this show because the characters remind me so much of the art school kids i got to know everyday for over four years. it's laughably familiar for me...

at some point great music comes along to save us from the excretion that satan unleashes unto the world everyday. (Nickleback, Justin Beiber, The Jonas Brothers, Areosmith, Brokencyde... ect) sometimes it's hard to notice great stuff, but then sometimes it's not. for instance with this post i'm mentioning a young female artist that just took me by surprise. it was so fast and brilliant that i was left pondering her merit and eventually wanting a lot more. that artist is named, Janelle Monáe and she is here to save us.

janelle monáe is from kansas city, kansas and started her career in music back in 2003. she eventually moved to atlanta georgia where she met Outkast member big boi and collaborated on the Idlewild soundtrack songs, "call the law" and "in your dreams". she eventually recorded her debut ep, Metropolis Suite I (The Chase) and was nominated for a grammy with the song, "many moons" back in 2009. in 2010 she dropped her debut full length, The ArchAndroid (Suites II and III). if you were wondering why the suites, she is high on the "concept" idea and shows her inspiration from such aspects as the writings of Phillip K. Dick, the music of Claude Debussy and the films of Alfred Hitchock and Fritz Lang. the latter of which inspired her album artwork. (see the 1927 film, Metropolis...)

to describe her music i would have to say it takes elements from Little Richard, James Brown, Al Green, The Smiths, Joy Division, David Bowie, Prince, Depeche Mode, Sly and the Family Stone and Rick James. sorry, but for a sort of explanation i'm probably failing at really hard right now, that's the best i can do for her. you just have to listen to the song below and check out even more from her because it legit. i'm super cereal, the music this young woman makes is truly awesome and her performance is stellar. no wonder No Doubt asked her to open on their 2009 summer tour!!!

so, for the music you will find those two already mentioned albums. first is the ep, Metropolis Suite I (The Chase) and second is the full length, The ArchAndroid (Suites II and III). i HIGHLY suggest you all give this girl a shot and give her lots of praise amongst your friends because more people need to hear this stuff. oh, and go see her open up for Of Montreal on their current tour. dig it!!!

Paranoia, Paranoia...

okay, so this is the start of my first official week of work. last thursday and friday were just warm ups i guess. overall, the day went much better than i expected. things started to take shape in my routine and i began to get a better grasp of what it is i do exactly. i believe i will be able to handle my duties with more care and determination than most recent things i've done. i know i can do it, so i'm looking forward to getting it all down pat.

going back a bit to the 90's today with the music choice. it's a good one most people might have forgotten, or not even known. slipping by is the band, Harvey Danger.

harvey danger was a pop/rock/indie band from seattle, washington. they formed in 1992 and broke up in 2001. that lasted until 2004 when they reunited and then met their end for the final time in 2009. the band was closely related to the indie rock/post-grunge movements of the late 90's. they can even be associated with emo rock, so there ya go.

anyway, going back to what i had mentioned, you might have known this band at one time. remember the teen horror/sci-fi flick, Disturbing Behavior??? that one that starred katie holmes in her glory days??? well the band had a song in that film and it caught the attention of many people all over. it helped them sell tons of copies of their debut album and became a cult favorite. that song was, "flagpole sitta" and it's awesome. despite what many will consider a, "one hit wonder" type of band, harvey danger were much more than that. they developed a strong underground fan base and continue to be loved by many despite their sad departure playing music.

and with that, i'm pleased to present the bands three full length albums. i'm skipping out on a few ep's, so go elsewhere for those thingamajig's!!! in first place is the debut, Where Have All the Merry Makers Gone?. this is followed by the album, King James Version and then their final output, Little by Little.... these are great albums and i want you all to try them out. you might find your next favorite thing like i sometimes say...

What a brilliant idea...

taking cues from past experience and trying to interpret it into something new and refreshing is what people have to do nowadays. sometimes it works and most of the time it doesn't. in this case i'm going to mention the movie, Inception. christopher nolan has taken ideas from past movies and re-interpreted them into a wholly unique and gratifying experience. to get to the point, inception is freekin' brilliant and it works!!! go see it now and then discuss it's many MANY layers. don't be intimidated by it's length and ideas. the film isn't trying to fool you and make you seem stupid. no, instead it gently takes you into it's own personal world and shows off it's lush colors and traditions. and by that i mean, it's a trip through time and back, up and down, and side-by-side. there is so much going on that you might need to take a break, or a breath, but just for a warning: don't leave during ANYTHING. it's a hard choice to make, but if you have to go you will most definitely miss something important. so anyways, go see perhaps one of the best movies in recent years. i don't say that often...

i want some more hardcore punk and today's music choice is, Modern Life is War.

modern life is war started back in 2002 and broke up in 2008. they were from marshaltown, iowa and became that states saving grace in music. (according to the hardcore kids who think Slipknot aren't all that...) the band became know for it's unique style of hardcore punk that usually avoided standard song structures and almost entirely abandoned the use of breakdowns. lead singer jeffrey eaton sang with a melodic approach and was often compared with tim mcilrath of Rise Against fame.

despite their short time as a band, they did get around to releasing three albums and one ep. these are held up in high regards and remembered fondly. for their time, modern life is war became saviors in the fledgling hardcore scene. their legacy will always be remembered.

and as for those albums i mentioned, you will find them all here!!! we first start with their self titled ep, then move on to their full length debut, My Love. My Way. next in line is my personal favorite album and fan favorite, Witness. and in last place is their swan song, Midnight in America. so there you have it. go see inception and start jammin' modern life is war while you ponder the final scene in that movie. dig it...

So Tired...

i'm exhausted and as my dad is currently saying to me, "i need rest..." yeah, today was my first day at IHS. i arrived very early and now it's very late. i need to get some sleep, so i'm gonna stop this post right now...

well after i mention some music right quick. so, yesterday was about the band Daughters, and going with sort of the same pace here's the band, Ceremony.

ceremony is a hardcore/thrashcore/powerviolence/punk band from rohnert park, california that formed in 2005. they have gained a huge following in the hardcore underground and currently sit at the top of many people's "must see" lists. along side fellow bands like Fucked Up, Trash Talk, Punch, Blacklisted, Sabertooth Tiger, Paint it Black and Coke Bust, ceremony are considered one of the latest hardcore bands to take the genre up a notch and not only embrace the old-school, but also incorporate new elements and expand on the already established sound and style. it's a ferocious listening experience that will leave you totally exhausted like i currently feel...

okay, so this is a big list i guess. it's pretty much their entire discography!!! we first start with their self-released demo, then follow that with the ep, Ruined. next we have the album, Violence Violence and then the ep Scared People. following that is another ep titled, He-God-Has Favored Our Undertakings, then the full length, Still Nothing Moves You. we then are met with their newest ep titled, Sick, then their latest and brilliant full length, Rohnert Park. give these a listen and buckle up because it's about to become worse than a school bus accident. dig it!!!

Surprise, Surprise...

what a day. i awoke to the sound of my phone vibrating against my window ledge. it was a call from the local IHS. they asked me to come in for an interview around 1:15. this was something that came about from my previous attempt to apply at that location. for that past attempt, i failed to fully included every document in my application. take this as a note. if you are going for a federal job, be sure to read the application thoroughly and included EVERYTHING it asks. oh, so as for the interview.... i nailed it!!! i now have a job with the indian health services and i start this thursday!!! i'm still a bit shocked...

and since i'm shocked i need something spastic. let's listen to Daughters.

daughters were a math-rock/hardcore/screamo/grindcore band from providence, rhode island. they formed after the ashes of the screamo/hardcore band As the Sun Sets in 2001. the band quickly became famous for their intense and acrobatic live shows. the band members style and artistic talents behind their instruments and live setting was always something to behold and be aware of. too bad they called it quits this year after the release, of perhaps, their most accomplished work to date.

for the music you find their entire discography. we first start with the self titled seven inch followed by the excellent album, Canada Songs. we are then met with their Live at CBGB's compilation, (sorry for the rapidshare...) and then the polarizing album, Hell Songs. and finally we have their third and final full length which is also self titled. look into these for a bit and set the pace as fast as you want. this is all micro bursts anyway...

I'm Drone...

i feel a bit sick right now. i think i stressed myself to the point of sickness. it's not the first time that's happened. anyway, i had to get my car fixed which i did and i'm glad to be done with that. bbbbuuuuuutttttt the thing that's stressing me the most is my current job search. i recently applied with with my tribe and i just found out today that there are 15 people who applied including me. i'm going to keep my hope up and my prayers prayed because i really need this job, or at least something. i feel my layers being peeled back almost to the point of having nothing left...

it's still raining here, so the day feels depressing and quiet. this kind of weather can do that to people. for me it's just another by-the-numbers sort of thing. (oh, i'm so full of DRAMA...) ppppfffffttttt yeah, so anyway here's some music to fit the mood, courtesy of Stars of the Lid.

stars of the lid is an electronic/ambient duo from austin, texas. the members are brian mcbride and adam wiltzie. they started their collaboration in 1993 and have been going strong ever since. their songs are largely beatless soundscapes, composed of droning, effects-treated guitars along with piano, strings, and horns; volume swells and feedback fill the gap of rhythmic instruments, providing dynamic movement within the songs. Their sound has been described as "divine, classical drone without the tedious intrusion of drums or vocals". ---according to their wikipedia profile...

if you happen to like artists like Talk Talk, Brian Eno and Labradford then the stars of the lid are right up your skirt. for today i'm posting only one album from the duo. it's their 2007 double album titled, Stars of the Lid and their Refinement of the Decline. it's an amazing collection of music bursting from the seams and ready to be digested by curious and open-minded listeners. ambient music is for the background, so try it out when doing homework, or relaxing, or even when making love while on psychedelic drugs...

Amazing...

just one more quick thing for today. below you will see three videos that are of amazing quality and talent. the first two are videos from italian artist BLU. the guy makes street art using paint and stop motion all combined with that ruff, underground vandalism approach. it's very surreal and absolutely brilliant!!! and after that is a video containing the commercial for the "Let's Color Project". it aims to "spread colour all over the world" by teaming up with communities to paint buildings, houses, roads, public places, what have you. the music is by Jónsi Birgisson who you might know as the lead singer of Sigur Rós. it's another amazing piece to watch unfold. enjoy!!!

BIG BANG BIG BOOM - the new wall-painted animation by BLU from blu on Vimeo.

MUTO a wall-painted animation by BLU from blu on Vimeo.

this makes me want to get my art supplies out...

I want to travel blind...

i'm so very tired right now. i spent all morning in ada attending my doctor's appointment. i'm finally home now and i want to make this quick post then take a nap. as of right now, my dad is having knee surgery. i hope the old man has a good operation and all goes well.

since i'm so sleepy, i want to post something that's quiet and refined. here's another one of the most influential singer/songwriters to exist. a person of great mystique and talent, mr Leonard Cohen.

leonard cohen is one of folk's most accomplished artists. alongside other notable singers like Bob Dylan, Nick Drake and Conor Oberst, leonard cohen is a cult favorite and often regarded with very high praise. besides being a wonderful singer, leonard cohen is also a poet and novelist. he is famously reclusive and at one time spent several years in a zen buddhist monastery. this dude comes from our neighbors to the north, canada, and resides in montreal quebec. he started his career in writing in 1956 and pursued making folk music in 1967.

today you will find four albums by this folk mastermind. we start with his amazing debut, The Songs of Leonard Cohen, then follow that with his second album, Songs From a Room. next we have his third album, Songs of Love and Hate then his latter album, Various Positions. the two video's i'm posting are my favorite tracks from leonard and they are his most popular. "suzanne" comes from his first album and was made famous by singer Judy Collins and "hallelujah" comes from various positions and was covered greatly by the late Jeff Buckley. i hope you all will try these out and see if you can't get inspired to do great things like leonard has...

Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river
You can hear the boats go by
You can spend the night beside her
And you know that she's half crazy
But that's why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges
That come all the way from China
And just when you mean to tell her
That you have no love to give her
Then she gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer
That you've always been her lover
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that she will trust you
For you've touched her perfect body with your mind.

And Jesus was a sailor
When he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching
From his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain
Only drowning men could see him
He said "All men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them"
But he himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone
And you want to travel with him
And you want to travel blind
And you think maybe you'll trust him
For he's touched your perfect body with his mind.

Now Suzanne takes your hand
And she leads you to the river
She is wearing rags and feathers
From Salvation Army counters
And the sun pours down like honey
On our lady of the harbor
And she shows you where to look
Among the garbage and the flowers
There are heroes in the seaweed
There are children in the morning
They are leaning out for love
And they will lean that way forever
While Suzanne holds the mirror
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that you can trust her
For she's touched your perfect body with her mind.
