You Didn't Realize...

i was well enough today to get out and mow the front and back yards for the first time since i can't remember when. (i don't really care to remember mowing ventures...) anyway, as i was pushin' the metal clunker, i noticed that my stamina and strength was giving out rather quickly. it was a little unsettling for me and it made me think of the reasons why. it's not like i'm a weakling or a fatbody. (even though i always think i am...) i'm guessing it must be my medication use, or the fact that i haven't really eaten a decent meal in almost three days. yeah, it's probably the food thing...

hopping right along with the continuing 60's throwback week, here are The 13th Floor Elevators.

the most awesome psychedelic band with a jug player, the 13th floor elevators existed from 1965 to 1969. the hailed from austin texas, and are noted for not only using a jug in their music, but for possibly being the first psychedelic band, or at least the first to use the term to describe their music. led by singer roky erikson, the band played countless local shows before getting mainstream coverage with their only hit single, "you're gonna miss me". if, by chance you happen to have seen the totally fantastic movie, High Fidelity, you might notice the song i've mentioned. it was the first song heard in the movie during the opening credits and it's a rockin' tune that hits a home run all the time for those first listeners. if you haven't had the pleasure, then do yourself a favor and watch the video below.

over the years the band ran into legal trouble along side their frequent drug problems. the poor lad, rocky erikson, was a victim of paranoid schizophrenia and thus, had to face the drama. he spent several years in and out of federal mental institutions as a result of his condition. the band broke up and that was that. in latter years, roky would get back on stage and dominate his cult status as a 60's icon and musical artist.

today you will find the bands debut, The Psychedelic Sound of the 13th Floor Elevators. this is a wonderful album of blues/folk/garage/psychedelic rock that came straight from america. dig it...
