The days become the weeks, become the years...

hello there, this is schuyler checking in and remembering what is coming up soon. actually, it’s an event that happens tomorrow. you see, this thursday is my birthday and i have been going over this post for about a year. well, my plans have been shot down, as i was going to write this long epic piece on the band, Radiohead, but have instead chosen to wait a bit longer for that. radiohead are too important for me and i don’t think i’ve given myself enough time to think about the basic idea for that post. you see, like i might have mentioned a few times before, this blog is much more than just a music posting site. no no, instead it’s a brief escape into my own little world of which i allow you all to read. the music is chosen very carefully every time i make a new statement, in order to coincide with my, at the moment, attitude and feelings. my history with certain bands are one’s usually dealing with my past, present and future, so i like to carefully take my time when writing on them. like i said, it’s more than just posting music for people.

so, it’s been a full year of living for me. i didn’t know if i was going to make it, but it seems i’m still here by golly. i can say that i’m grateful for that, but just not as enthusiastic like some might be. i blame that attitude on my depressive condition of which i currently have an everyday struggle with. despite that ordeal, i have made it through and things are beginning to look up, albeit, very slowly. i’m in the process of trying to save up and move out of my parent’s house, get a newer and better computer, decide on a car, spending time with friends, being open to new experiences, looking for that special someone, powwow dancing, eating healthy, working out everyday, church, sleeping, Call of Duty, catching up on The Office, waiting for the next Harry Potter movie, walking my dog, rubbing the cat, hangin’ with dylan, reading more books, eating buffalo wings, going to concerts, skipping soda pop, not visiting new mexico, working on the splashes, enjoying my job, being a good role model, keeping my hair short, trimming my nose hairs, waxing my eyebrows, listening to good music, possibly voting in the next election, skiing, applying, visiting, figuring out where bigfoot really is, pizza modifications, ignoring the media, traveling, halloween, new radiohead music, oklahoma weather, understanding my destiny, comprehending, coping, living, and writing, writing, WRITING!!!

here’s some music by a band i discovered through my travels here and there. what i mean is, i discovered them there, (new mexico) but they are from here, (oklahoma), so i guess that was backwards… anyway, the music is made by a band called, Damezumari.

the word, “damezumari”, comes from the japanese game called, Go, and it roughly means, no escape from an impossible situation, or better yet, “screwed”. i find it interesting that the band took their name from such a term, but after my first hearing of their music, it makes sense. damezumari formed back in 2003 and are from tulsa, oklahoma, but currently have members in other states. the band plays a very wonderful version of screamo/skrams that is both powerful and exciting, yet also tender and full of enough hooks that you can’t help but hum too. to me, they represent the best of what modern emo has to offer, and this is only met when you filter out all the current garbage and get down to the source. they have great instrumentation that seldom reminds me of the twinkly sounds from the midwest scenes, and singing/screaming that is chaotic like the old san diego style from the mid 90’s. thusly, if happen to dig bands like, Drive Like Jehu, On the Might of Princess, Braid, Angel Hair, Algernon Cadwallader, Swing Kids, Antioch Arrow, Clickitat Ikatowi, Hot Cross and Yaphet Kotto among thousands of others you will probably like damezumari. and really, i can’t argue enough, for when i say check this out each and every time, i really mean it. these guys are good and i consider it as my birthday present to post them on here. thanks guys!!!

okay, so hopefully this will be their entire discography and with no faulty spots. oh, and just to say it, sorry for any weird links and abnormal sized pics. i try hard to make all the posts look neat and tidy, but it sometimes doesn't happen like that. yeah, so in firstplace is their demo called, No Hugging = No Learning. this is then met by their official debut called, Angelous Novus, which is an ep. next we have another ep called, The Politics of Lonely, which is a phrase from a Weakerthans song. after that is another album, or possibly ep called, Hitherandthithering Waters Of. and then, we now come to my personal favorite, which is a three way split with local oklahoma screamo bands, Steeples and Someplace To Hide. next in line is another split, this time with the band, Fire Team Charlie, then their latest release called, Hope Inscribed on Handbills. in last place is supposed to be their newest album, Blood Meridian, but it doesn't seem to be available yet. it might never be, but i'll be sure to keep and eye open for that one. alrighty, you see the goods, now go grab them. enjoy the sounds and thanks for stopping by during the celebrations here!!!dig some...

Standing In The Sea...

wow, as i type this the time is 7:41 am. that’s freekin’ early for me on a weekday!!! i can’t help it though. my car is sick and dying. the poor thing is up in the years and getting weaker by the day. yesterday the old security system that was factory installed, decided to mess with me after church by not letting me leave. i couldn’t get the darn thing started, so after having my dad come over there and trying to fix it, we both decided to leave it and continue the next day. this is the reason i’m up so early. anyway, it’s not so bad i guess. i'm gonna escape with dad at lunch time to go fix it, so that means i get a few hours off possibly. possibly maybe…

i’m sooooooo tired, that i can’t properly decide on who i want to post about for music today. hmm… let’s shuffle around and see what comes up!!! (one minute… two minutes… three minutes… four minutes… google search… doughnut eating… coffee drinking… still google searching… YES!!!) alrighty, here’s an awesome band called, TV on the Radio.

tv on the radio is a unique indie rock band from brooklyn, new york. they formed back in 2001 and are currently on a year or so hiatus while members pursue other projects. The music they create, to me, is best described as, indie/post-punk/electronic/lo-fi/dream pop/shoegaze. it’s an all around awesome style, and not to forget, but they also incorporate a bit of jazz and soul as well.

i first heard of these guys while watching this show on mxtxvx called, Subterranean. the music video for their song, “staring at the sun” was shown and it made for a fuzzy memory, but one i couldn’t help remembering. i recall looking up the video on the internet and being drawn to it’s lo-fi power and ambiance. that was that, and i’ve been a fan ever since. oh, and i got the awesome opportunity to see them open at a Nine Inch Nails show, which was an experience in itself...

now, for the tunes we have a good amount of things to post, but nowhere near as many as last time. first up is their hard to find, self released album, OK Calculator. (a play on the amazing, Radiohead album...) next we have their first ep and it's called, Young Liars. after that we move to their real, official debut, which is called, Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes. next is their wonderful follow up titled, Return to Cookie Mountain, then finally, we end with their latest called, Dear Science. that's that then there though the thing thinks thoughts that they thrash thump them thingamabobs...

Froggy...

the state fair has been happening these past two weeks and it’s coming to the end of it’s run. i got to enjoy it last thursday, so it’s not like i missed it or something. still, i would like to go again. i really had a good time and the moments with my family were memorable. the food was awesome as well, which it usually always is. (i left that night with a large cinnamon roll!!!) we played some games, rode some rides and exhausted ourselves silly. i believe i slept good that night too. i was even able to make it to work the next day, rather reluctantly. will i go again??? that’s a good question. i have no idea as of right now…

oh, and to add to the mix, i’ve been sick as well. my sinuses are making this difficult and the end results are grotesque. my nose is dripping with snot and it’s moving faster than the river of slime from Ghostbusters 2. i describe my head as being caught in a fish bowl, sloshing around and hitting the sides. my eyes are burning and my nose is raw from using paper towels instead of tissue. all in all, not one of my better weeks, but much much more better than having an extreme cold or flu. and oh yeah, lastly, my voice sounds like Tom Waits.

tom waits is the man!!! he’s one of music’s most beloved icon’s and has garnered himself a very large fan base. waits started in the music biz around 1972 and has been going strong ever since. he rarely tours, and if and when he does, it’s magical and also funny. his music, best described by me, is folk punk, mixed with some jazzy persuasion and industrial harshness. yeah, really, that’s about right. heck, the guy’s been around for so long, he’s bound to experiment with something other than just rock right??? anyway, he’s an artist as well as an actor, having appeared in such movies as, Wristcutters: A Love Story, Mystery Men, Coffee and Cigarettes, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and Domino. he is also the victor in many lawsuits for copyright infringement. these are a funny addition to his already strong history. but ugh, i just wish i went to see him on his last tour. he came to tulsa and i totally skipped out…

now i know i’m not the best when it comes to tom waits knowledge, but i do believe i’ve got some skillz here. i, myself, own several of his most beloved albums and it’s my wish to continue the collection starting with today’s massive post. you see, not only am i going to post my personal faves, i’m also going to post all the rest!!! oh, and just so you know, a few of these albums are in the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums Ever Made list.

okay, so to speed through this huge discography, i'm just going to list the albums and make minor notes on my favorites. also, just to be clear, i'm leaving out most of the compilation albums since they are mostly attempts at greatest "hits" collections, and tom isn't really a "hit" maker per se. right, so we first start off with the debut album, Closing Time, then follow that with my favorite of his called, The Heart of Saturday Night. if you happen to like that old dirty, smokey feeling of loneliness and desire, then you will probably dig that album. next in line are the following: Nighthawks at the Diner, Small Change, Foreign Affairs, Blue Valentine and Heartattack and Vine. this album features the song, "jersey girl" which was made popular by Bruce Springsteen. this was also his last album on the asylum label. after that we have the soundtrack for the film, One From the Heart, which got him an academy award nomination, and then two very awesome albums back-to-back called, Swordfishtrombones and Rain Dogs. the latter album has the song, "downtown train" which became a #2 hit for Rod Stewart. bleh... and so, we move along and come to the album, Franks Wild Years, Big Time (a live album), The Early Years: Volume 1, the soundtrack to the film, Night on Earth, and then the amazing, Bone Machine, for which he won the grammy that year for best alternative music album. following in pursuit are the albums, The Early Years: Volume 2, The Black Rider, and my second favorite tom waits album, Mule Variations. this album is ranked at number 416 in the rolling stone top 500 and it also won the grammy for best contemporary folk album. and then, finally, we come to the last albums which are, Blood Money, Alice, Real Gone, the three disc compilation of b-sides and rarities, Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards and then his latest release, Glitter and Doom Live, which is a live album of his most recent and possibly last tour from 2008. PHEW!!! i'm out of breathe almost, and i bet you all are too. this was a huge post, so thanks for all your patience on getting here. (sorry for the weird spacing below...) i hope you all enjoy this wonderful talent at hand and with that, it's time for me to blow my nose and rub my eyes once again...

hey there!!! just for fun, i'd like to post the new music video from the Deftones. the song is called, "sex tape" and it comes form their recent, and wonderful album, Diamond Eyes. if you haven't gotten that yet, you crack me up. oh, and this video is sexy and represents what a lot of the deftones themes and ideas are about/like. i'm totally tripping to the awesomeness and what's even more cool is that this is my favorite tack off the album!!!

Stopped Up...

well, it seems schuyler has come down with a sickness... (ugh, i hate that silly band who's song that phrase sounds familiar to...) i don't know what it is, but i'm assuming it's just a simple cold, or possibly a flu, so right now i'm at home and typing this. yes, i took a sick day. this type of common illness can probably be treated with some over the counter meds and i think there is plenty of that stuff lying around the house, so yeah, gonna be good as new.

in other news, my dad is currently driving to tulsa to see his favorite band, Rush. i have no actual feelings for that band, and i have no feelings towards their music. i know this makes me sound like a huge jerk, but gosh, i really have no feelings towards their fans either. i don't know why so many people like them. they aren't that great. heck, in my own strange little world, i'd like to say i've seen much better bands play basement shows, but of course that wouldn't matter since no one else was there besides me. i guess it's just a simple matter of taste, and i'm not enjoying the texture their music leaves behind. i think geddy lee has an annoying voice, neil pert is overrated and alex lifeson is just, eh... maybe it's the generation gap, but hey, i like Led Zeppelin as much as my dad does, or did, so i don't think it's that. i try my best to be as open minded to all types of music as i can, but face it, i just don't like the proggy styles of rush. maybe it's just their fans that keep my away, much like how Slipknot and most metal shows in general made me hate them. eh, who knows. certainly not me i guess...

hmm, i wonder what kind of music can help sooth my feeble body and make things better??? i don't think punk or metal will suffice, and neither will all the rest. hmm... and hmmm... and some more hmmmmmmmmmmmmm... WAIT!!! i know!!! how about the music of Brian Eno!!!

brian eno is one of the worlds best producers, period. he's been involved in the music industry since 1970, originally playing with the proto-punk/glam/nu-wave band, Roxy Music, who will get their chance on this blog in the near future. some of eno's most notable work is his producer credits on classic albums by the likes of, U2, Massive Attack, Coldplay, The Talking Heads, Depeche Mode, Devo and James. in, or around 1973, eno went solo and produced critically acclaimed solo albums that pushed the boundaries of electronic minimalistic music, and thus, re-wrote the book on many subjects. he's also credited for inventing the term, "ambient."

for eno's discography, i'm only posting the important stuff that matters most to me. we first start with his amazing debut, Here Come the Warm Jets. this is then followed by the album, Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy). after that we then meet his most cherished work, which is the album, Another Green World. this contains the hit song, "st. elmo's fire" and is also the sort of birth place for his instrumental, ambient textures. after that is the album Discreet Music, which is considered the first all ambient album. next is his final solo album that features his vocals, and it's called, Before and After Science. and lastly, we finally come to my favorite eno releases, which are his four ambient albums. volume one (my personal favorite) is called, Music for Airports. volume two is called, The Plateaux of Mirror, followed by volume three which is called, Day of Radiance, and then, finally, the fourth volume which is called, On Land. try these out and space out while your at it. get to feelin' better...

There And Back Again...

this isn't a hobbits tale, but a schuyler tale. this past week was a surreal experience to say the least. i still can't quite comprehend what the heck happened, but needless to say, and sorry for using the term, "needless to say", i'm very much in a daze and can't quite get out of it. i'm thinking that the music i've posted the past week is very much a reflection of how my mind is/was working. tonight might be the most eccentric. let's hope this next week will be a better one...

tonight's music isn't an easy choice to settle on, nor is it an easy listening experience. but, it is excellent and worthy of my blog space. tonight, let's get experimental with the music of, The Pop Group.

the pop group is a post-punk band that formed back in 1978 and continued on till 1980. they most recently got back together, but chances are i'll never get to see them. anyways, their brand of music is pretty scant and almost vacant of emotion, but don't let that fool you into thinking this is just dead on arrival. it's bleak, but also full of a rhythm that flows freely and funky. they can make you dance and also make you pull your hair out. in a statement on their plans to reunite, the band said this, "there was a lot left undone,....we were so young and volatile....let's face it, things are probably even more fucked now than they were in the early 80's.....and we are even more fucked off!". this is exactly how i feel now that i'm up to the last day of the weekend. tomorrow is monday and with that comes work. the desperation i'm currently having towards wanting to write and follow my dreams is conflicting with my duties to make money and move out and live a normal life like most older people think i should. i don't think i'm that normal, and the pop group weren't that normal either...

posted on here is the pop group's debut album, simply titled, Y. it's an endurance test in patience and curiosity. i can't explain what it means to me because i'm currently despondent in all areas, but i do enjoy it very much. try listening to it when you are stuck in rush hour traffic...
