Substance Over Style...

well i got a call just a little while ago to sub, but when i answered and entered my pin number it kept denying me. i must have entered my pin over four times before the line cut off completely. mind you this is not the first time this has happened, but it is the first time i have been cut off and not able to get through. i dialed the substitute hot line to see if i had any offers on my account and there were none. so yeah, i once again missed an opportunity to sub again. i swear i really tried this time, but alas, i guess it was just not to be... again!!!

i'm gonna make this a short post so here is the music. this is a band that many have been gettin' into for a few years now. of course many would probably say it's because of the bands image. well that's bollocks for sure because this band actually has talent and yes, they also have an image. an image that is very retro non the less. (that's some big hair kids!!!) anyway, here are The Horrors.



i have been pluggin' this band to many of my friends for years now. i got into them after reading a very small paragraph in rolling stone about their video for the song "sheena is a parasite". it was directed by chris cunningham who makes some of the most intense and artistic music videos i have ever seen. (Squarepusher, Portishead, Autechre) the song is relatively short, but it's also fast and groovy. oh, and there's tons of strob lights and some grotesque octopus monster that explodes from the inside of a woman in the video who also happens to be actress samantha morton.

oops, i forgot to mention a brief bio. um, well the band started in 2005 and they all hail from england, home of fish and chips. to describe their sound i would have to say 60's style garage punk. similar old school artists like The Seeds, The Sonics, and Radio Birdman and more modern garage punks like the criminally underrated The Mummies. you can also here other artists like The Birthday Party and Gun Club. this all changed of course once their second album dropped...

let's start right here with the discography. first is their simply short ep which is self titled. this was the first taste of the band before their debut lp came out. it's an awesome little ditty with great tunes and of course the song "sheena is a parasite". next is aforementioned lp titled Strange House. this album shreds with that classic garage punk feel. it's loud, noisy, and full of spunk arrogance. i love it!!! okay, and now the last album and most current by the band is my personal favorite and one that separated the band from what they once were to who they are now. the album is Primary Colours. so, what exactly happened to the band once this album came out??? well for starters they matured into full fledged musicians which they always were, but just not to the point of showing it very well. this album showcased the band going into a more darker tone and embracing old school 80's nu-wave artists like Joy Divison and Depeche Mode. just to please everybody, i will also say that this album reminded me of many more artists like Neu!, The Editors, Interpol, The National, Magazine, Can, Modern English, My Bloody Valentine, and Slowdive.

yes the band went all out and made a very very good album right here. i love the shoegaze influence and downbeat of nu-wave throughout the album. oh, and chris cunningham was a producer as well!!! so now you know and the more you know the better you are!!! listen to these jams and collectively freak out!!!

If You're Listening...

The Doors is on television at the moment. what a trippy movie that was. i personally love oliver stone films (Platoon, Wall Street, Any Given Sunday) and this particular one always sits on the tip going either way depending on my current mood. as of right now, the movie is doing just fine because i'm about to eat and i'm also blogging. what always strikes me about this film is how much stone made the scenes filter with excess use of drugs. it all flows like a crazy trip and adding to that is the wonderful music by the doors themselves. i know oliver stone was a 60's man. he went to vietnam and came back home to what we all know was a different world, a different america. needless to say, this was always one of the few val kilmer movies i liked besides Thunderheart. ha ha and i guess i can say that it now stands as one of the classics of cinema. oh, The Salton Sea was another awesome val kilmer flick.

let's skip ahead to the music now. the food my dad is cooking is just about ready!!! here is an old school emo band from the 90's that made one of the first leaps to the majors which alienated a lot of older fans, but made many many new ones. i'm talking of course about Jimmy Eat World.



this band started in 1993, forming in mesa arizona. they played local shows then began to tour finding other emo/indie type bands with similar styles and feelings towards the music. unlike most of the emo bands i post on, these guys are still around!!! they have released six studio albums and are currently working on their seventh. i'm sure most of you know who these guys are based off their extremely catchy single "the middle" and the video that accompanied it showing lots of teenagers in their underwears, but whatever!!! too many fans go far back to their older albums as their choice of music from the band, but it doesn't matter really. it's all good stuff!!!



okay, so here is the tunes!!! skipping their self titled debut i'm going straight to their second lp called Static Prevails, then next is the amazing and old school fan favorite Clarity, and last is their major label breakthrough Bleed American. here is a little short history for ya!!! bleed american was released right during 911, and was latter change to Jew or self titled. it wasn't until the 2008 remaster that the original title came back. just a thought for ya to think about when jammin' this great music.

Read the writing on the wall...

last night i went to sleep being creeped out by my own imagination. i rolled over like a burrito and faced the wall which is opposite my bedroom door. i woke up quickly and realized my force field had been shut down due to me turning away. as a child i use to sleep facing the more open parts of my room so i could spot whatever monster was gonna kill me. this was my defense against the fright of the inevitable and darkness. good thing i had a glowworm to light up in case things got wicked. this story reminded me of the Squee comics by johen vasquez. squee did the same exact thing, he rolled over in his sleep and woke up realizing he had his back turned and was facing the wall. when he slowly turned around he saw a monster. ha ha

well i didn't see 2012 last night. i chose to go to a concert instead. the concert would have been great if i actually did go... i changed my mind again and just stayed home playing call of duty. i later went to my best friends which is always a treat and we just hung out. every time i go there i seem to learn a bit more about myself and life in general. i guess its from seeing him being married and having children. he is totally different than what i remember from back in our high school days. it's interesting to watch how this is working. maybe it's for the best that i see all of this now because it is definitely preparing me for those kinds of future decisions i know i will have to make. i just hope that i make the right ones...

i feel a bit nostalgic today, so here is an older band that almost everybody out there knows. they were one of the most talked about live acts during their prime in the 90's. their political opinions were at the top of many debates and they released stellar albums that became better than the last. here for you all to enjoy is: Rage Against the Machine.



this band formed way back in 1991. lead singer zack de la rocha use to sing for the hardcore band Inside Out which were freekin' awesome by themselves. that band made a song called "rage against the machine" and thus the song became the band name here. guitarist tom morello and bassist tim commerford with drummer brad wilk joined zack and made rock history.

the music created by these guys was not heard of that much outside the underground, or at least until the majors got wind of it. some other bands out there were doing a bit of the same thing, but none were as good as rage. i'm of course talking about the rap-rock thing. yes, this band is what i consider the best rap-rock band in existence. better than Korn and definitely better than Limp Bizcuit. those clowns couldn't hole a candle to how awesome and superior rage were and are. i actually hate to lump those bands in with rage since i don't even consider them to be in the same category. rage, like the Deftones, were their own thing and untouchable. many imitators, but none who knew how to do it with such passion for the music and the subjects at hand.

sadly the band broke up before i got to see them in their prime. i remember the MxTxVx music awards show were they blew the roof off the house, but lost to limp bizcuit in the hard rock category. it was total bs, but whatever. they came on and just did their thing and then left. well, bassist tim did jump onto a piece of the scenery and made limp bizcuit look like a bunch of douche bags, but whatever. it was after this that they played some final shows and then broke up. it wasn't until 2007 that i got my wish to see them play live. they re-united at Coachella: Valley and Arts Festival 2007 in indio california to rave reviews and 70,000 people. i was one of them and let me tell you, it was quite a show. first off it was the biggest crowd i have ever been in and second i was three full days deep into a weekend of music before they took the stage on the last day. it was amazing and the crowd exploded like an atom bomb as they opened. one of the few events in my life i will always remember.

so like i always say, with that here is the music!!! first album listed here is the self titled debut. this is the one that started it all. be sure to listen to the song "freedom". the music video was all about political prisoner leonard peltier, who all native americans know. the second album is my personal favorite. it's called Evil Empire. it's just solid through and through. the third album is what many consider to be their best, The Battle of Los Angeles. and last but not least is Renegades. this is an album made entirely of covers with the exception of one new song. it showcases how diverse this band really was and how they could make older songs even better with their own style thrown into it. so here ya go, the epic rage against the machine post. if you haven't yet, get into it!!!

Okay...

sooooooo today is thursday and once again i have nothing much to say. it seems that i only post blogs in order to keep up the posting numbers, but in reality i really am trying to just write each and everyday. i graduated from college with a bfa in creative writing, so i think i should at least try to keep up with that original plan. i still have a goal to write a novel and get it published sometime in the future. everything else is in front right now, so my writing is having to take a back seat at the moment. i hate to do that because each and everyday i could have been writing something for that book, but i always pass it up in order to do something else. i also could be working on the final stages of my powwow outfit, but i pass that up as well... ugh. i'm always missing something special in life. i won't pass up on anything anymore!!! like this weekend for instance. i believe me and my mother are possibly getting together to watch that movie 2012. yeah, so that will be silly and cool at the same time. i just hope it all works out well.

i know that i have many obligations on my plate to finish. i need to write my novel, i have to keep subbing and get that experience in order to become a full fledged teacher, i also need to finish my fancy dance powwow outfit as well as spend important time with my family. yep... lots and lots to do and i'm still young so it's not like i can't do any of it.

i want to add another post in the letter "o" section, so here is a classic 90's emo band that most of you have never heard of. the little i know of them is this: they were from kalamazoo, michigan around 1993-1995. they toured a little outside their state in the summer of 1994, but mostly just played local shows. they were called Ordination of Aaron.



like most of those more obscure 90's emo bands, these guys are not known that well outside their local scene, but still today we have their entire discography for you!!! Ordination of Aaron: Complete Works. it's really good stuff right here. the sound is what i expect from the 90's emo/indie world and it's great. please note that most of these bands were not the best musicians, but the heartfelt passion is there in full force and that is way more than nothing. enjoy!!!

To The Engravers...

i didn't post yesterday because that day was war. the battle has now begun and call of duty is in control. i will just say that this is probably one of the best looking first person shooters i have ever played. also, it is official that this, hands down, has the ultimate and best multiplayer out there for any game anywhere. the engine is so smooth and the quality is magnificent. there is so much you can do in this aspect of the game itself, and that's not including the regular campaign and the awesome spec-ops mode. this is going to become one of my favorite fps of all time, right up there next to call of duty 2 for the pc. you all need to get this game and join me on the ps3 multiplayer. my id is: eatdogs

okay, now here is a band that many orgcore punkers love to death. they have been creating their own hype by performing more frequently now and releasing solid ep's and albums. they have that gruff vocal trait that many org punks love. the band states Hot Water Music, Small Brown Bike, Third Eye Blind, Silent Majority, and Lifetime as their influences and you can definitely hear those bands throughout their discography. here for you is the totally awesome Polar Bear Club.



forming in 2005, this band hails from rochester and syracuse new york. they started early, only playing a few select shows as a side band for the original members while on downtime from their other bands. after many shows, the band began to develop that infamous fan base that many so want, but can't quite get some times.

they released a cdr demo in 2005 and that caught the attention of triple attack records who soon released their first official ep titled The Redder the Better. the ep was met with rave reviews and many critics claimed the band to be the next big thing in the underground. with that the band started to take their music more seriously so work began on their debut full length. the album in question became Sometimes Things Just Dissapear. this was it for the band. their moment of clarity and full circle discovery. the full length had many great songs that fans claim as their best and critics hold up in high regard to lyrical and musical approach.

indie hardcore label bridge nine took notice and got the band to sign with their label. the short ep The Summer of George was released in between albums to hold off fans craving more. in 2009, the band dropped their most anticipated record yet, the fantastic Chasing Hamburg. i say fantastic because it is, but not to all. the album has almost polarized (no pun intended) old school fans because the band's original style has changed so much. i think they have just come into their own and all those old comparisons probably cramped their feelings towards their own music. i know i wouldn't always want to be compared to someone else's work.

see ya on the battle field...

This is our last goodbye...

not really, but for now i will say "see ya laters!!!" tonight i will go and wait in line to get my hands on a copy of... wait for it... ... CALL OF DUTY MODERN WARFARE 2!!! omg, i can't freekin' wait!!! i'm so excited about it!!! i have been waiting patiently for ages to get this game and i know that once it's in my playstation 3 i will be transported into the action right off the back and will forever be playing online multiplayer for years and years.

well i want to keep this post a bit short, so here is the music already. this guy here was an amazing singer-songwriter who died tragically at a very young age of 30. this death wasn't due to drugs, alcohol, or depression/suicide. no, the poor soul died by drowning. the circumstances as to why that happened are a bit cloudy, but it was what happened back in 97. the man was named Jeff Buckley.



he is the son of Tim Buckley, who is also a singer-songwriter. after playing at local small clubs in new york and gaining a small following, jeff began to focus on crafting his own songs and eventually signed with columbia records and released his one and only album Grace.

what is so amazing about this young talent were the vocals. influences such as Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Van Morrison, and Judy Garland are shown throughout his music. in his early days, he often did covers by these artist as well as many others. in just the short amount of time he spent making and playing music, many collectors out there have created countless bootlegs of this man and his music. even though one official album was made, several others have followed in it's place.

jeff buckley holds a special place in my heart. this goes out mostly for his song "last goodbye". if there was ever a song to describe heartbreak and the pains of love, this was and is the one. other notable songs from him include, "grace" "mojo pin" the spectacular cover of Leonard Cohen's song "hallelujah" and last but not least, the haunting and personal favorite, "so real". in that song, there is a certain line where he sings, "i couldn't awaken from the nightmare that sucked me in, and pulled me under..." it almost seemed as if he was singing about his own death...

yeah yeah, i know i know. i have this unhealthy obsession with death and artists who have died. it's not that bad really. i don't ponder on it for countless hours as such. i just really have an interest in what these people were doing during those last minutes before the lines were cut in their lives. there is a certain tragic beauty about all of it... oh well, don't listen to me. i'm just ramblin' about stuff that's not important. it's all about the music anyway, so here it is!!! enjoy and get into it like i always say!!!
