Catchup, Catsup, Ketchup...

it's going on a saturday now and so i needed something to do. i have a few items to return to the store, but that can wait. while laying around yesterday, i kept thinking on what to post about. i ended up deciding to sleep on it and wait till the morning. well, it's the afternoon now and i'm finally getting around to this thang here by golly.

i need a quick shave it seems...

as i write this, i'm currently jamming the latest album by Broken Social Scene called, Forgiveness Rock Record. so far, so good!!! i just love that band anyway, so even on a bad day they still make wonderful tunes.

and this is what my focus is on today. i'm playing, uh ahem, CATCHUP. you see, while i have made lots of posts, some of them aren't that up-to-date. i blogged on certain artists before they released their newest albums. now this was all done in the best interests of the artists themselves because they need to get their work out there asap before it all drowns in the internet sea. it really only takes one person to spread music to many many others. i guess i'm just another one of those types of people, but i do like to state that i'm doing it for the music and the artists benefit. (take that whatever way you want. it's a horrible statement...)

my sarcasm knows no bounds...

okay, so what we have here is a plethora of bountiful music sponsored by my waking habit. my habit is to eventually awake and then do something, so the something for today is this post yo!!! (ugh, sooooooo dumb...) anyway, we first get things started with Bedouin Soundclash and their latest called, Light the Horizon. after that is a 7inch single from Bomb the Music Industry! called, Everybody That You Love. next is the already mentioned broken social scene album and following that is the truly great, Diamond Eyes by the Deftones. in hot pursuit is the always stunning music of Envy and their latest album, Recitation is no small fry. they hit it out of the park once again. Interpol came back with a self titled effort and Jónsi Birgisson unleashed his second solo album. those twinkly folks in the band, Look Mexico awed me with their new full length album, To Bed To Battle which has album artwork that reminds me of hayo myazaki and studio ghibli and Superchunk proved once again that they can still be awesome no matter how old they are with the fantastic album, Majesty Shredding. and in last place are The Gaslight Anthem with American Slang, The Hold Steady with Heaven is Whenever and The National with High Violet. ok, so there you go and thanks again for reading if you did!!! (sorry for the weird links...) dig it...

Totally, Extremely, Fantastically, Awesome...

right here is a link for everyone to stream the new Deftones album, Diamond Eyes. set to be released may 25, this is the sixth album from the band and it presents a new era for the group. first off, original bassist chi cheng, is not playing with them this time around. the poor soul was involved in a terrible car wreck some years ago, and has been in a coma ever since. for the time being, the band has recruited bassist sergio vega, who is known for playing in the band, Quicksand.

I have always defended the Deftones as not being a stupid nu-metal band (I hate that term) but instead an artistic group that makes amazing music. Some people will most likely say I'm praising them too much and just a fan boy, but seriously, not many musical acts take the risks these guys do and come out still standing.

On first listen, I can safely say that this album is great. It's got the right stuff from the guys I expect, but also some changes too. Deftones are always a band that I look to for great change in musical style and it seems that they've done that this time. The change feels more like a remembrance, and what that means is a step back to their roots. Yeah, I know a lot of bands say things like that, or they present themselves with this idea to try and duplicate their old styles and make similar material, but that usually ends up being complete bollocks. Yes, this album reminds me of moments from their past, (Around the Fur, White Pony) but there is much more going for it than just that.

On the opening song, "Diamond Eyes", singer Chino Moreno, croons softly over the heavy chugging of guitarist Stephan Carpenter which isn't anything new, but what makes it powerful is the emotion and sheer force behind it. This isn't a by-the-numbers song, and neither is the rest of the album. No, what it is, is music that's immediate and brought to the front. There is power here and you can feel it through every note sung and every note played. The Deftones aren't without their trademark psychedelic/dream-pop styles, and you will find this on songs like, "Beauty School" and "Sex Tape". Frank Delgado, with his keyboards and turntables, shines through and thoughts of older tracks like, "Kim Dracula" and "Digital bath" come to mind. This is where the Deftones step aside and let their oozing talents speak directly for them. They don't seem afraid to experiment and I can tell a lot of work went into these mentioned songs. Usually the best stuff is made through confusion and anger. Main songwriter, Chino, usually gets a chance to vent his sleazy side too. First single, "rocket skates" is your best bet for ultimate release. "You're red, soaking red/let's writhe, let me see you trip." The climax is the main chorus which screams "Guns./Razors./Knifes./Fuck with me." I also don't want to forget drummer, Abe Cunningham, who's sound is expanded and pounding like Transformers wrestling. The drums are heavy, and used to great advantage in the overall ambiance.

Not to forget Sergio Vega of Quicksand fame, the new bassist adds great layers to the already dense and dough boy thick songs. His bass thumping grooves along and isn't lost in all that's going on. Speaking of what's going on, there is a lot of it. Over the years the Deftones have garnered the strength to expand their sounds from the rough and tumble early days, and what you get now is a full band going all out and not sitting in the back. There are elements of shoegaze/post-rock/metal/post-hardcore and I'll even go as far as saying emo. (The emo term should be thought of in conjunction with artists who really meant something in that genre and not the usual tripe we all hear today...)

On a final note, I want to mention the cover art. Album artwork use to be a major concentration during the early days, but it seems to be an after thought in our modern society. To sit and ponder on the art is something I like to do (When it's artistic and not stupid...) and looking over the new Deftones album I'm reminded of my native culture. The owl is thought of as a messenger. The message is usually death. It might be you, or someone close. It can go either way. I assume the Deftones didn't pick this through a garbage pile. It was put there for a reason. What can it mean??? Blah blah blah, just a little something to think over.

Dig it...

Rocket Skates...

here is the new video for the song, "rocket skates" from the Deftones. this song comes from their new album, Diamond Eyes, which drops may, 18th 2010. this song is pretty freeking sweet and it encompasses all the bands dramatic traits. it's like old school Around the Fur style mixed with the dream-pop dynamics of their White Pony era. i can't wait for this album!!!

You're red, soaking wet.
I'm right next to you.
You're red, soaking wet.
Lets writhe, let me see you trip.
One move that will keep you wet.
Lets fall in a long sadistic trance.
Put the keys in our hands.

Guns. Razors. Knives.
(Fuck with me)
Guns. Razors. Knives

You're red soaking wet.
I'm right next to you.
You're red, soaking wet.
Lets sail in this sea of charms.
Lets drown underneath the stars.
Lets drink with our weapons in our hands.
Lets sleep in this trance.

Guns. Razors. Knives.
(Fuck with me)
Guns. Razors. Knives

You're red soaking wet.
I'm right next to you.
You're red soaking wet.

Guns. Razors. Knives.
(Fuck with me)
Guns. Razors. Knives.

You're red soaking wet.
I'm right next to you.
You're red soaking wet.
I'm right next to you.
You're red soaking wet

I don't care were just far away...

it's now saturday but i'm still awake. since i have been doing nothing but reading angry comments to me from some youtube people and jammin' some tunes, i have come to the decision to post on the blog. this is one i have been waiting for for a long time and now that i'm here i'm ready to begin. (it's all about the music.)

okay, so here is the band Deftones. i'm a passionate person and there are few muscial acts that i get passionate about. many people say that so and so are their favorite band and that's okay, but do they really mean that??? are most of those people old enough to really decide what artist is their favorite? do they even listen to that artist today??? my dad often tells me that Led Zeppelin is his favorite band and i believe him. he got to see them in their glory days when he was a teenager and to this day he still jams them often.

what i'm gettin' at is i have a band like that. the deftones are that band. i truly believe myself when i say that they are my favorite band. i still listen to them today and will listen to them when i'm old and zombies or aliens take over the planet.

i don't know what it was that made me like them so much back then, but during my high school years this band litterally GOT ME THROUGH the tough times and terrible life that i had. yes, some of the worst times of my life were back when i was a teenager. i try my best to not dwell on them, but i'm not that strong when it comes to that. but despite those harsh moments, the deftones provided an outlet for me to escape.

it was their third album White Pony that made me a fan. i was up really late one night back in 2001 and watching MxTxVx when the video for the song "digital bath" came on. it was all shot in black and white and had this dream-pop elegance to it. now i freekin' love the shoegaze/dream-pop genre and when lead singer Chino Moreno hit those high notes i was filled with extacy and warmth. this man knows how to sing!!! he reminded me of Morrisey and a bit of Bono. (thats not a bad thing)

okay, so i got into them real heavy and went and picked up all their albums they had to date at that time which was three. my last year of high school they released their fourth album which was their self titled effort. after that not much happened for a long time. in 2006 they finally released their fifth album Saturday Night Wrist. this album became their defining moment for me. this one album showcased the bands entire creative output and all of their influences came to fruition. that year i got to see them in denver and to this day that was one of the best experiences of my life. i actually had my "emo" moment. i was litterally in tears. i just couldn't believe it. i was seein' my favorite band live for the first time!!! the songs they played shot me back in time and reminded me of all the stuff i went through during my teen years. it was almost like a timewarp. i have never had that type of experience again. (i don't even think drugs could do it...)

so here you go. all five of their albums minus their bootlegs and rarities. Adrenaline, Around the Fur, White Pony, Deftones, and Saturday Night Wrist. Just like Radiohead (my second favorite band) deftones fans are very passionate about the band and they know just how great these guys are. it's funny, but when i met the fans at the future deftones concerts i went to, you could really see how much they loved this band. there was a special energy flowing through the crowds and even though there were douchebags flipping them off and yelling at them, the fans didn't care. it was just them and the band. connecting together and sharing a moment. what else could you want???

I climbed your arms
then you pulled away
a new cavity moved into
my heart today
the more she sings
the more it seems
that now I'm through
now I'm through
with the new you
I drove you home then
you moved away
new cavity moved into
my heart today
the more i scream
the more it seems now I'm through
now I'm through
with the new you
new you
