In A Constant Heaven...

there is a serious pain my right arm. from the elbow up to the shoulder. those who know me will find this familiar. i’ve had some serious trouble with my right arm ever since i almost threw it out in high school baseball. it’s a nuisance and one that gets under my skin to the point of annoyance. seriously, i haven’t had a good sleep on my right side in over ten years!!! and i prefer to sleep on my side yo!!! ugh, this sucks…

so, last night was a good event. i picked up my buddy from the airport and we caught up quickly. not to sound super cheesy, but it felt like she had been gone FOREVER!!! heh heh, yeah, i’m totally cheesy and i like it!!! this coming weekend should be eventful, what with me having actual stuff to do instead of just laying around the house like my cat joshua… well, there is something i could do that will take some of my time away, but i’m thinking that i should wait a bit longer before diving into that. i’m of course talking about Dead Space 2!!! i just got it tuesday and finally got to use my best buy gift cards from christmas. oh man, this game looks sick!!! it also came with the original nintendo wii game, Dead Space Extraction, which is an on-rails shooter/prequel to the original game. they upgraded the graphics and implemented the new playstation move controller, which i’m now a sucker for. (i’ve played it at mike’s and it’s awesome!!!) so i guess this means i got more bang for my buck. all i need is a move controller and some time to kill and i’ve got an eventful showcase ahead of me. bbbuuuuuuuttttt, i think i’d rather do the important things this weekend like our annual Indian Falls Creek meeting and spending time with kristy. oh, and saturday night Jimmy Eat World is playing here in okc, so yeah, video games can wait. besides, i sort of want to purchase a bigger and better hd tv before getting involved in something as epic as dead space 2…

since i feel a little more happier and happier each day in these new times, i think the music should reflect that as well. for today’s post, i want to focus on a band that was a great find for me back in 2003. they go by the name, The Rapture.

Picturethe rapture are a post-punk/dance/indie rock band from new york city that started back in 1998 in san francisco i think. they quickly gained recognition for their intense, yet catchy and insanely fun live shows. they also arose during the post-punk revival of the 2000’s, alongside other acts like, Bloc Party, Interpol, The Killers, The Strokes and Editors. i usually held the rapture up a little higher because their music has this incredible flow and beat that makes you want to dance and dance hard!!! back in 2007, i finally got the chance to see them live, which was at Coachella. they performed right after LCD Soundsystem in the dance tent and it was a rowdy show. i bopped and weaved like i knew what i was doing and guess what??? nobody cared!!! we were all dancing terribly, but at that moment it didn’t matter because the music was so darn good and the atmosphere was amazing.

as of right now, the band is currently making their fourth full length album and going on as a three piece. i think the future is still bright for them and that their epic has yet to come. and for the tunes, we have four listing here today. first is their debut full length, Mirror, then the ep titled, Out of the Races and Onto the Tracks. next we have their second full length, Echoes, and if you want a great place to start, here would be a good choice. this is my favorite of theirs and it's a mad crazy good time. and lastly we have their third full length, Pieces of the People We Love. yep yep yep, that's it for now!!! grab some and dig it...

Green Chili...

things seem to be spreading about in the schuyler camp. i'm enjoying the sudden change in attitude and lifestyle. i feel as if the next step is upon me finally and i can move on from this basement of shame and depression. ugh, just thinking about my past makes me sick to my stomach, but amazingly, i can now look upon it with an academic sort of mind frame. a history lesson in what not to do i suppose. and gratefully i now have somebody close that can make the days better and turn my mind away from such awful feelings and thoughts. (big shout out to miss kristy!!!)

she caught me at a vulnerable moment...

ok ok, enough with that cheese. i want to go to norman and buy some lp's for my new vinyl collection that i'm wanting to start, so let's get this music thing over with. in recent email correspondence, i've been given the chance to review a new artist and their debut album, so let's get going with the duo known as, Night Surgeon.

from the press release sent with the cd i got in the mail, it says that these guys hail from portland, oregon and i'm thinking, started around 2000 something. eh, sorry for not knowing the exact date of inception, but these cats are a little hard to find. of course don't let that keep you from checking them out!!! their music is pleasantly surprising. now, based off what the press release has quoted, these guys have been compared to artists like, Depeche Mode. Cut Copy and Placebo. i can get behind those and agree. lead singer patrick replogle does have a similar vocal style that can remind one of brian molko, but i don't want to stop just there. often when listening to music, i end up thinking of many artists all at once. i like to try and pinpoint where certain musicians sit in between those who have already established themselves. to go a bit further, i'd say i was reminded of roland gift from Fine Young Cannibals. yes, that band FYC. no seriously, his vocal style reminded me of roland and i find that an awesome link. replogle does the glitchy music justice, while not relying to heavily on studio distortion for his vocals which often can hamper down the tunes. i want to see this performed live now!!!

oh, and let's not forget john boyd who supplies the live drums and piano. combined with patrick's live guitars and synths, the duo creates a miss mash of this past decade's better moments. there's traces of techno/dance as well as new wave synths and chiptune/mega man blasting through robot bag guys type of jams. saying these guys are just like similar indie pop acts Passion Pit and Owl City, would be a slap in the face i'd say. (no, i didn't compare them to those two. i read that somewhere...) night surgeon is their own unique sound and style and by golly, it freekin' works!!!

while jammin' through their entire debut album, Day for Night, i was taken aback by the crisp, yet clean production. this comes courtesy of studio wiz, gabriel espinosa, who has worked with artists such as Blondie and Fischerspooner. the music follows simple, yet dynamic patterns that rush the listener along as if they were riding tidal waves. the atmosphere is calming, but with just the right amount of rushing and free falling that it can get you caught up in the moment. if i had to make any complaints, i'd say it comes from the repetitiveness of a few songs. they do seem to follow the same sort of rhythm and style, but this isn't a major, nor a terrible issue because thankfully we have the slower tracks, which in my opinion, are the albums best kept secrets. track three, "roman error" and track six "better to be young" are my faves. this is where the fyc comparisons took root. also, if you've ever jammed Yeasayer's latest effort, Odd Blood, you will find solace here if that hasn't happened yet.

overall, i'd say this debut warrants a strong listen and if i had to rank it, i'd give it an 8/10. do pay attention because this is something refreshing and hopefully useful when it comes to making a choice between good music and bad music. night surgeon = good!!! owl city = baaaaadddddd... oh, and i also want to give a big shout out to patrick for sending me an advanced copy of the album and for getting me in on the know. please visit their myspace to jam the tunes and grab this album when it drops on february 15, 2011.

For Suck's Fake...

through the thickness of life, i’ve managed to end up back at the start again. it’s a monday, and right now i’m thinking of that movie, Groundhog Day. maybe i shouldn’t right it all off this early. i mean, it’s friggin’ monday!!! well anyway, this past weekend feels like it never happened. what the heck is wrong with me??? my gosh, i’m so tired. my eyes are burning and my bones feel weak. ambien is a heck of a drug. i kind of like it, but it’s not natural. neither are diet wheat pills.

if there was one thing that made the weekend a bit better, i would have to say it was play practice. sunday started with me going to church and feeling despondent like usual. i attribute this to the late night i spent partying at my best friends house. anyway, as i was sitting there, looking like a large pile of dirty socks, i noticed this new girl i’ve never seen there before. she came with this married couple i know. she looked to be about my age i guess. what caught my attention though, was how closely she resembled this other girl i met last year in california. strange as it may be, i had seen this new girl once. i believe it was at the oklahoma city indian clinic powwow. she sat a couple of rows in front of my family. she caught my attention back then as well, mostly for her shoes which looked like they belonged on a gladiator.

church ended like always and i drove home, stopping at kfc to “attempt” a meal. i think i gave it about 30 to 45 minutes before it all came back up and flushed away. man, i’m destroying myself. and here i’m admitting it on the internet. is there no shame??? of course there is, but i need to write something before i get to the music portion of this post. anyway, time passed as i watched Dinner for Schmucks, and i went back to church to practice. this proved to be the best part of the day. we all did our roles and chatted, laughing at our mistakes and the awkwardness. i’m feeling more and more proud to be a part of this event than i was on first thought. i’m not doing this for me, but for god. to keep the spirit of christmas alive…

ok, so who thought what i just wrote was totally cheesy??? (*raises hand*) yes, well it’s true though. despite what you read on here, i am christian and i don’t mind saying that. but of course, what would a blog be without drama right??? it’s those personal reflections that make people’s mouths wet for more. i guess that’s why memoirs are so popular. i just hope this stuff is more better and “real” than whatever some celebrity scumbag has written. those people don’t live like me.

oh, and today’s post is brought to you by the food product, “ding dongs.” a sweet, delicious, cream filled chocolate cake in a nice to-go package. ( i got’s a whole box o’ dem in my desk yar!!!)

earlier i was listening to a band called, The Dismemberment Plan and i think they are good for today.

this group, forming in 1993, hailed from washington, d.c.. they broke up in 2003, but have recently reunited for some sporadic anniversary shows. they are indie rock with a good mix of post-punk and 90’s emo. to date, they released five albums and several ep’s before ending. barsuk records recently re-issued their most popular album, Emergency and I, which is has gone on to become one of indie rocks best accomplishments. there isn’t much more for me to say here. if bands such as, Jawbox, The Promise Ring, Death Cab for Cutie, Fugazi, Q and Not U and, uh, i guess Moss Icon float your boat, then the dismemberment plan is blah blah blah dig it blah blah blah…

hopefully below you will find their third and best album, Emergency and I. the title is a play on the cult classic british film, Withnail and I. you all should go watch that. oh, and listen to this as well...

The only thing worse than bad memories
Is no memories at all
From the age of 20 to 22 I had five friends
None of whose names I can recall
And as I would walk down K Street to some temping job
As winter froze the life out of fall
Yeah, I must've been heaving a ball
Different scene outside your window now
Same VCR, same cats
Different people at the very same job
Similar alley, different rats
The trash goes out on a Tuesday now
You got to make a note about that
Yeah, this time you're where it's at
You can't say it but I know it's in there
You don't know it but I know that you're scared
Obvious and lonely a spider in the snow
Now you find the very same pit still yawns
Deep down within the very same gut
The very same ghosts still seem to haunt you down
Down those lines you always tried to cut
You thought you just might need a little change
And now you find you got nothing but
How can a body move the speed of light
And still find itself in such a rut?
You can't say it but I know it's in there
You don't know it but I know that you're scared
Obvious and lonely afraid to not let go
You can't say it but I know it's in there
You don't know it but I know that you're scared
Obvious and lonely a spider in the snow

The Blackest Of Fridays...

i tried my best to not go out today, but it looks like i can't resist the urge to spend some hard earned cash on junk. today is black friday and all the crazies are out shopping in full force. do i dare try my luck out on the town with video games on my mind??? i dare say i shall!!! actually, it's much easier for me since we have an awesome game stop and best buy just a mile down the road. heh heh

you know, i might not find anything worth buying since i wasn't up at dawns crack, or the crack of dawn... regardless, i'm on a mission to purchase a few select adventures in gaming that i will most likely not play that much since i have NO TIME to myself these days. anyway, for a recap on yesterday, i had a really good time with my family. it was just me, mom, grandma, dylan and dennis. we ate awesomely good food until we were about to bust and then crashed out all over the house. later that night after i took grandma home, me and mom went to the movies and watched Harry Potter. it was my second time so far. i wonder if i'll make a third trip???

the lead up to this week has been an extremely tough one, which if you've read this blog for some time, won't come as a surprise. my life is filled with too much drama, and yeah, sometimes i like to post about it. so what, wanna fight about it??? ahem, so yeah, and yeah, and yeah... it's just a normal time for the life of schuyler "mr. self indulgent" deal. a day can't seem to pass without something crazy happening. BUT, yesterday wasn't one of those days. it was a great day!!! there was nothing wrong with yesterday, and for once, i had peace. i occasionally think that peace only comes with death, but i'm wrong. peace can come anywhere, anytime. i just have no clue when it will show itself...

okay, so for the music here's a new cat with a band that goes by the name of Twin Shadow.

twin shadow is, like i said, a newer band from brooklyn, new york that formed in some year i'm not sure of. the music is a sort of return to form for post-punk that brings memories of the first time i heard Interpol and The Strokes. it's simple, yet sturdy and a bit bleak. pretty much what post-punk/new wave is all about. check out the video below for an example why don't ya???

i really don't have much to say since i'm just learning about this band myself, but from what i've heard, it's good stuff. here, check out their debut album, Forget and see if you can love it yourself. dig it...

Gobble, Gobble, Gobble...

happy early thanksgiving folks!!! yeah, i'm saying it a day early because tomorrow i don't think i'll be around to post, so yeah, a day early won't hurt. i'm excited as well as very HUNGRY!!! i can't wait to bust face on some sweet potatoes and turkey. my family makes the best food ever, so i know i'll be in good hands.

oh, and i guess i should say a few things i'm thankful for. well, for starters i'm still alive. next, i guess i should mention my job. yeah, i'm thankful for that. i'm also thankful for my family and friends who have stood by be post-graduation. it's been a very difficult time for me and i don't think it will get any easier, but at least they are all here with me. and lastly, i'm thankful for my desire to keep seeking my goals, no matter how hard and sometimes trivial they seem to be. without goals, my life would be nothing...

so, here's to you and yours. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

oh, and for the music here's the avant garde punkiness of Pere Ubu.

these kool katz started this band back in 1975 and are still going strong. they hail from cleveland, ohio, so there's something better there than just drew carey. they play post-punk, but mix it up so much that it's simply easier to just say, experimental rock. they are one of the most influential american bands to emerge during the late 70's proto-punk and new wave period. to this day, they still don't get enough credit for how amazing they were. their weird sense of style has inspired countless bands and without these dudes, we wouldn't have half the cool music that we do now and so on and blah blah blah...

so, for the tunes you have the chance here to check out their first two albums. we start with their amazing debut, The Modern Dance, then follow that with the equally amazing album, Dub Housing. check it and get down with it yo!!!

The McRib Is Back...

currently searching for mcrib locations in oklahoma has proved to be useless since they are nowhere close to me. i could drive all the way to el reno, but eh... today is saturday and i'm feelin' pretty good. i think i'll go down to norman and spend some time at the outlet mall. maybe i could find a new sweater or something. oh, and our beloved oklhoma sooners play today at 6pm, so that's going to be awesome. aw, just a relaxing day. next week will be a bit crazy though, because the new Call of Duty goes on sale tuesday, so i'm going to have to bunker down and sit through yet another midnight release. oh well, it's just the life of a gamer/total NERD.

and one more thing, i'm currently in the process of looking for a place to live. well, i still have my dad's, but what i meant to say was, "i'm looking for my own home." i'd actually like to have a loft, and that's not because i attended art school and look all moody and such. naw, it's just that i totally dig that industrial look and the open space would be awesome. i would probably have enough room to practice my powwow dancing and to have underground boxing matches!!! uh, yeah...

okay, so i want to get this over with quickly because i'm burning daylight. today's music post comes courtesy of HYPE. you know what hype is don't ya??? well, this is something most music buffs consider hype, but whatever. it's pretty cool stuff and it comes from a three piece known as, Salem.

alright, now bare with me because this might blow your mind. or maybe not... so, salem is a band from traverse city, michigan that formed in 2006. they pretty much started an entire genre with their debut ep. this genre is floating around the internets at a rapid pace. it's known as witchhouse, or drag. heck, i've even heard it called, crunk shoegaze, darkwave, industrial and what have you. as you can probably see, i've posted a tone of labels for this band and rightfully so. the thing is, i hate labeling music and arranging it into all these genre's from nowadays. still, this group kinda sorta needs this in order for people to get the point. OK, to make this more simple, i'm going to say it's chopped and screwed post-punk. yes, that's basically what it is. it's gothic and punk, rock and pop. this melting pot of styles makes for an interesting, yet subdued quality that i honestly find addicting. of course, i'm a music geek who loves almost everything, so this is right up my alley. here, listen to the song "dirt" below for a quick taste...

SALEM - DIRT from ACEPHALE on Vimeo.

this music had the right amount of drugged out bliss that makes me sleepy, yet intrigued. it's a matter of finding something you like in certain things that let's you explore a bit further. now this type of mentality can make things hard for you, like drugs for instance, so don't use this idea for everything under the sun. i'm mostly referring to the music yo!!!

so, it's time to wrap this up. i think i have their entire disco up to this point so let's get started shall we??? in first place is their debut ep, Yes, I Smoke Crack. this was originally released back in 2008 and quickly gained an underground following. suddenly, tons and tons of independent artists have sprung up doing the same sort of thing. seriously!!! if you don't believe me, type witchhouse on google and see for yourself!!! anyway, after that is the Water ep, followed by their first seven inch single Ohk/Sweat (I). after that is their next seven inch Frost/Legend and then their full length debut, King Night. the debut is awesome stuff and need's to be played loudly and with good bass. so there you go, try this and dig something entirely different.

My Neck Hurts...

i recall watching a cartoon show with my little brother called, Chowder. it’s pretty cute and harmless, and has a wonderful art palette. on this one particular episode, the main character, who i think is a rabbit, had a flatulence problem.

from what i can remember, his problem was so bad that it caused him a lot of pain and struggle. but, as most cartoons should do, the tides turned and chowder used this gift and made himself famous for farting on cue. uh, and the next thing i remember is that he dubbed himself, “rootin’ tootin’” and became a theatrical sensation, at least for as long as his flatulence lasted. why am i writing about this??? i have no idea…

aw, speaking of cartoon shows, last nights South Park was hilarious!!! it paid homage to the Spiderman movies and comics, as well as make a few jabs at the cherished anime classic, My Neighbor Totoro. it also seems to be the middle episode in a three-part arc, so the conclusion is next week. hmm, where will matt and trey take this next??? oh, and the gothic kids made an appearance, so that was extra funny.

speaking of goth, i guess it’s time to finally mention the king of all goth bands. this band has been around for a LONG time and have been through the ringer. they still rip and inspire many. i’m of course speaking about, The Cure.

the cure hail from crawley, england and have been around in some kind of form since 1976. they were one of the first bands, alongside Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Wire, Magazine, Bauhaus, The Buzzcocks, Per Ubu, Public Image LTD, and Gang of Four, in the post-punk movement. they were given the goth rock stigma because of their image and lyrical style. this, along with their peers, established the goth rock scene that is really just post-punk and nu-wave all mixed together, but with more mascara and darker clothes.

fronting this group is charismatic lead singer, robert smith. you may know him as the giant moth-type man who defeated mecha barbara streisand when she invaded south park back in it’s first season.

oooooorrrrrrrr, you may know this guy by his mysterious glammed up look that has probably graced many “dark depressed” suburban teenager’s bedrooms since the 80’s on some form of poster. regardless, this is the man who singlehandedly wrote the emotions and feelings of so many people who couldn’t write it themselves. he has this massive cult following and the people love everything he touches. as for me, i consider him one of the better pop artists out there and i wish more could make music as good as he has.

and for the music i'm posting a personal best of. these are the albums i'd take along if the cure was the only thing i could listen to. starting off is their american debut, Boys Don't Cry. this is actually a re-arranged version of their uk debut, Three Imaginary Boys, but with different cover art and track listings. the title track is just pure post-punk at it's finest and it makes me want to dance every time. next in line is the double album, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, then their most famous, Disintegration. this album defined goth/post-punk/nu-wave music for years to come and is listed in the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums Ever Made issue at number 326 respectfully. and then in last place is the album, Wish. ok, so you now have a little bit of goth rock 101 behind you. to finish this course you must partake of the music and dance away!!! dig it...

I would say I'm sorry
If I thought that it would change your mind
But I know that this time
I've said too much
Been too unkind

I try to laugh about it
Cover it all up with lies
I try and
Laugh about it
Hiding the tears in my eyes
'cause boys don't cry
Boys don't cry

I would break down at your feet
And beg forgiveness
Plead with you
But I know that
It's too late
And now there's nothing I can do

So I try to laugh about it
Cover it all up with lies
I try to
laugh about it
Hiding the tears in my eyes
'cause boys don't cry

I would tell you
That I loved you
If I thought that you would stay
But I know that it's no use
That you've already
Gone away

Misjudged your limits
Pushed you too far
Took you for granted
I thought that you needed me more

Now I would do most anything
To get you back by my side
But I just
Keep on laughing
Hiding the tears in my eyes
'cause boys don't cry
Boys don't cry
Boys don't cry
