For Suck's Fake...

through the thickness of life, i’ve managed to end up back at the start again. it’s a monday, and right now i’m thinking of that movie, Groundhog Day. maybe i shouldn’t right it all off this early. i mean, it’s friggin’ monday!!! well anyway, this past weekend feels like it never happened. what the heck is wrong with me??? my gosh, i’m so tired. my eyes are burning and my bones feel weak. ambien is a heck of a drug. i kind of like it, but it’s not natural. neither are diet wheat pills.

if there was one thing that made the weekend a bit better, i would have to say it was play practice. sunday started with me going to church and feeling despondent like usual. i attribute this to the late night i spent partying at my best friends house. anyway, as i was sitting there, looking like a large pile of dirty socks, i noticed this new girl i’ve never seen there before. she came with this married couple i know. she looked to be about my age i guess. what caught my attention though, was how closely she resembled this other girl i met last year in california. strange as it may be, i had seen this new girl once. i believe it was at the oklahoma city indian clinic powwow. she sat a couple of rows in front of my family. she caught my attention back then as well, mostly for her shoes which looked like they belonged on a gladiator.

church ended like always and i drove home, stopping at kfc to “attempt” a meal. i think i gave it about 30 to 45 minutes before it all came back up and flushed away. man, i’m destroying myself. and here i’m admitting it on the internet. is there no shame??? of course there is, but i need to write something before i get to the music portion of this post. anyway, time passed as i watched Dinner for Schmucks, and i went back to church to practice. this proved to be the best part of the day. we all did our roles and chatted, laughing at our mistakes and the awkwardness. i’m feeling more and more proud to be a part of this event than i was on first thought. i’m not doing this for me, but for god. to keep the spirit of christmas alive…

ok, so who thought what i just wrote was totally cheesy??? (*raises hand*) yes, well it’s true though. despite what you read on here, i am christian and i don’t mind saying that. but of course, what would a blog be without drama right??? it’s those personal reflections that make people’s mouths wet for more. i guess that’s why memoirs are so popular. i just hope this stuff is more better and “real” than whatever some celebrity scumbag has written. those people don’t live like me.

oh, and today’s post is brought to you by the food product, “ding dongs.” a sweet, delicious, cream filled chocolate cake in a nice to-go package. ( i got’s a whole box o’ dem in my desk yar!!!)

earlier i was listening to a band called, The Dismemberment Plan and i think they are good for today.

this group, forming in 1993, hailed from washington, d.c.. they broke up in 2003, but have recently reunited for some sporadic anniversary shows. they are indie rock with a good mix of post-punk and 90’s emo. to date, they released five albums and several ep’s before ending. barsuk records recently re-issued their most popular album, Emergency and I, which is has gone on to become one of indie rocks best accomplishments. there isn’t much more for me to say here. if bands such as, Jawbox, The Promise Ring, Death Cab for Cutie, Fugazi, Q and Not U and, uh, i guess Moss Icon float your boat, then the dismemberment plan is blah blah blah dig it blah blah blah…

hopefully below you will find their third and best album, Emergency and I. the title is a play on the cult classic british film, Withnail and I. you all should go watch that. oh, and listen to this as well...

The only thing worse than bad memories
Is no memories at all
From the age of 20 to 22 I had five friends
None of whose names I can recall
And as I would walk down K Street to some temping job
As winter froze the life out of fall
Yeah, I must've been heaving a ball
Different scene outside your window now
Same VCR, same cats
Different people at the very same job
Similar alley, different rats
The trash goes out on a Tuesday now
You got to make a note about that
Yeah, this time you're where it's at
You can't say it but I know it's in there
You don't know it but I know that you're scared
Obvious and lonely a spider in the snow
Now you find the very same pit still yawns
Deep down within the very same gut
The very same ghosts still seem to haunt you down
Down those lines you always tried to cut
You thought you just might need a little change
And now you find you got nothing but
How can a body move the speed of light
And still find itself in such a rut?
You can't say it but I know it's in there
You don't know it but I know that you're scared
Obvious and lonely afraid to not let go
You can't say it but I know it's in there
You don't know it but I know that you're scared
Obvious and lonely a spider in the snow

Hakuna Matata...

(on another minor note, i wrote this blog entry a few days ago too...)

i’m sooooooooooooo sorry i missed these last few days. i figured the blog would still be around despite me not being there for a bit. after the effects of the past week, i needed a break from some of my hobbies and the blog, being one of the most important, seemed to be the chosen one. anyway, i’m back now and ready to start a new week in the life of schuyler deal. hmm, let’s see here… well, for starters, on friday the new, Harry Potter movie hits theaters and i’m terribly excited!!! i have been waiting for this a long time and it’s finally here!!! the last book is being made into two parts, so for the first time ever, a harry potter movie will hopefully get the justice it deserves. i mean, come on!!! this series has become one of the most epic out there and it really needs to be told as best as it can, especially when we’ve patiently reached its end.

ah, and in other news, yesterday after church i was called and asked to play joseph in our native american version of the christmas story. our own take on the traditional play is formed around us interpreting it all with a native american theme. it’s actually an awesome site and something way different than what most are used to. at first I was reluctant to do it, but after some careful thinking, i guess it won’t hurt. heck, they went out of their way to ask me and it seems they think i can do it, so i guess i’ll take the job. let’s see how this goes…

alright then, now it’s time for me to discuss my music selection. for today i want to post on a band that i’m currently listening to while typing this. they were called, Knapsack.

Knapsack were an awesome 90’s emo/indie/post-hardcore band from, i think, davis, california. they existed from about 1993 to about 2000 after lead singer blair shehan formed his new band, The Jealous Sound. for me, what makes a band like knapsack good is their hardworking honest music. it’s not the best of the best, but it’s much better than most of what was out there and still is. this was some of the best “alternative” rock to emerge during the 90’s. heck, all of that 90’s emo style music was the best because it wasn’t all washed out like it is now. try finding some sort of connection to the bands that make up that scene today… eh, anyway, before i blow a gasket complaining on today’s fumby music, i just want to show my appreciation here for a great band. if you happen to like a few groups such as, Samiam, Jawbreaker, The Lawrence Arms, Hot Water Music, Leatherface, Jawbox, Mineral and Texas Is the Reason, i don’t see why you won’t totally dig knapsack.

right, so for the albums we have three in store here. first is their debut, Silver Sweepstakes. this is then followed by their second release, Day Three of My New Life. and in last place is their swan song and best album, This conversation Is Ending Starting Right Now.... alrighty, so you have the goods and now is the time to make use of them. try this out and enjoy!!!

The opinionated are so opinionated...

my elbows hurt. i think it’s from the constant leaning while typing thing. my office chair is nice, with good lumbar support and soft cushions, but the arms rests leave little to desire. not complaining though!!! it beats having to sit on a cold metal chair all day. heh heh

so, how are you people doing out there??? have things gone well for you, or are there some struggles happening??? i most surely hope nothing is wrong. if there is, please know that i understand and if you need someone to talk to, please do that. uh, i’m not a counselor or doctor of any sort, so problem solving like that isn’t my specialty. still, if it means much to you, go ahead and mention something on here. like, if any of my tripe is connecting with you in some way, feel free to express what’s on your mind. if the music, or time period is relevant, let me know. i enjoy reading people’s stories, or thoughts on things like nostalgia and music, which frankly, is the majority of this blog. i know that somewhere, deep down, you are feeling emotions possibly and that is good. the freedom of expression is one of the greatest gifts so use it wisely. write something because writing is good. start your own blog if need be, and see how much you can do with it. if you can keep up a routine of writing once a day or so, then it will become a habit and writing is always a good one to have!!! (smoking and drinking are not…)

oh, by the way, i had another review posted on punknews.org. it's for the album, Around the Fur, by the Deftones of course!!! follow this link if you are the slightest bit interested... http://www.punknews.org/review/9668

in awesome news, it has come to my attention that a band i like has gotten back together. they are in the midst of planning future shows and hopefully new music, so let’s give a round of applause for, Boy Sets Fire.

boy sets fire was/are a post-hardcore/emo band from newark, delaware that formed back in 1994 and originally broke up in 2007. their recent 2010 reunion has sparked some interest in them for me, so i guess it’s perfect timing for them to get their due.

the band has a distinct style that was bogus during the 90’s hardcore scene. this style was a mixed bag of emotion and political approach. not that other bands weren’t doing the same thing, (Grade, Poison the Well, Thursday ect…) but it’s just that boy sets fire stood out well amongst the bunch. and so, as it comes down to most bands these days, there came the crossroads, and with that the decision to break the band up. members went on to form groups like, The Young Lady and The Casting Out, which are still sort of together I think. but now it is 2010 and the great news that boy sets fire is once again lit. i might actually have my chance to see them perform, that is if they happen to be anywhere near oklahoma…

aaaaaaaaannnnnnndddd for the tunes you will find pretty much their entire discography minus a few splits and other odds and ends i think. for the first prize we have their seven inch titled, Consider. after that is their first ep, with a very emo esque title called, This Crying, This Screaming, My Voice is Being Born. and then we arrive to their debut full length called, The Day the Sun Went Out. that’s some good stuff right there!!! after that is the ep, In Chrysalis, then the epic full length, After the Eulogy. next we have a pair of ep’s called, Suckerpunch Training and Live for Today. next in line is their major label debut, Tomorrow Come Today. this was a bit of a set back in many fans opinions, but hey, opinions are like girlfriends and boyfriends, most people got them, but they aren’t much to care about if you aren’t a worthy person to have that sort of thing anyway… aaaaannnnnddddd so we come to the album, Before the Eulogy, which is a collection of early material and rarities, and then their final full length, The Misery Index: Notes From the Plague Years. that’s it good buddies. try these out if you are into anything that sounds like music and not a toilet flushing, which is what almost everything else sounds like…
