The McRib Is Back...

currently searching for mcrib locations in oklahoma has proved to be useless since they are nowhere close to me. i could drive all the way to el reno, but eh... today is saturday and i'm feelin' pretty good. i think i'll go down to norman and spend some time at the outlet mall. maybe i could find a new sweater or something. oh, and our beloved oklhoma sooners play today at 6pm, so that's going to be awesome. aw, just a relaxing day. next week will be a bit crazy though, because the new Call of Duty goes on sale tuesday, so i'm going to have to bunker down and sit through yet another midnight release. oh well, it's just the life of a gamer/total NERD.

and one more thing, i'm currently in the process of looking for a place to live. well, i still have my dad's, but what i meant to say was, "i'm looking for my own home." i'd actually like to have a loft, and that's not because i attended art school and look all moody and such. naw, it's just that i totally dig that industrial look and the open space would be awesome. i would probably have enough room to practice my powwow dancing and to have underground boxing matches!!! uh, yeah...

okay, so i want to get this over with quickly because i'm burning daylight. today's music post comes courtesy of HYPE. you know what hype is don't ya??? well, this is something most music buffs consider hype, but whatever. it's pretty cool stuff and it comes from a three piece known as, Salem.

alright, now bare with me because this might blow your mind. or maybe not... so, salem is a band from traverse city, michigan that formed in 2006. they pretty much started an entire genre with their debut ep. this genre is floating around the internets at a rapid pace. it's known as witchhouse, or drag. heck, i've even heard it called, crunk shoegaze, darkwave, industrial and what have you. as you can probably see, i've posted a tone of labels for this band and rightfully so. the thing is, i hate labeling music and arranging it into all these genre's from nowadays. still, this group kinda sorta needs this in order for people to get the point. OK, to make this more simple, i'm going to say it's chopped and screwed post-punk. yes, that's basically what it is. it's gothic and punk, rock and pop. this melting pot of styles makes for an interesting, yet subdued quality that i honestly find addicting. of course, i'm a music geek who loves almost everything, so this is right up my alley. here, listen to the song "dirt" below for a quick taste...

SALEM - DIRT from ACEPHALE on Vimeo.

this music had the right amount of drugged out bliss that makes me sleepy, yet intrigued. it's a matter of finding something you like in certain things that let's you explore a bit further. now this type of mentality can make things hard for you, like drugs for instance, so don't use this idea for everything under the sun. i'm mostly referring to the music yo!!!

so, it's time to wrap this up. i think i have their entire disco up to this point so let's get started shall we??? in first place is their debut ep, Yes, I Smoke Crack. this was originally released back in 2008 and quickly gained an underground following. suddenly, tons and tons of independent artists have sprung up doing the same sort of thing. seriously!!! if you don't believe me, type witchhouse on google and see for yourself!!! anyway, after that is the Water ep, followed by their first seven inch single Ohk/Sweat (I). after that is their next seven inch Frost/Legend and then their full length debut, King Night. the debut is awesome stuff and need's to be played loudly and with good bass. so there you go, try this and dig something entirely different.

Columbus Is Dead...

i'm off work today, but for the wrong reasons. today is columbus day, and according to non-native americans', it's some sort of celebration of which many people get the day off. straight up, there is nothing worth celebrating on this day. columbus represents the beginning of the end for many MANY native americans. he was just the start of the long winded colonization of america and the raping of it's people. as a native american, i find myself never liking this holiday or history. i try to not live in the far far past when it comes to native american struggle because it's too hard to comprehend. oh, and how could columbus "discover" america if there were already people living on it??? anyway, i'm off and i'm thinking a bit deeper right now while typing this. i could write down a lot more things to spew about, but there really is no point. today is just another reason why the world is becoming such a terrible place. the ever present struggle to live each day surrounded by "zombies" and "politicians" is taking it's toll and eventually, we will all be eaten up by our own undoing. still, us native americans are here and we live each day remembering our loved ones and striving to stay alive in an unjust world ready to self implode...

my gosh, i need to chillax for a bit...

...

okay, so in order to get my mind off a few things, i'm going to write about music like i always do. this time were going electronic with an artist named, Flying Lotus.

flying lotus, also known as "flylo", or real name, "stevan ellison", is a young multi talented electronic producer from winnetka, california. he has been performing his own style of music since 2000 and has built a strong fan base and garnered rave reviews for his releases. he is currently on the warp records label which is the home to other notable electronic acts like Aphex Twin and Squarepusher. flylo is also a relative of John Coltrane and Alice Coltrane and cousin to Ravi Coltrane.

his music incorporates the family jazz styles as well as hip-hop beats and glitch music. flylo is often compared to producer, J Dilla, who's instrumental hip-hop beats were ahead of the game way back when. oh, and flylo has also been showcased on adultswim and is often used in their bumper music, though often uncredited.

for the music today i'm kind of going all over the place here with his releases, skipping out on a few ep's and singles, but mostly sticking with the overall available tunes. first two things to check out are his early beat compilations titled, July Heat and Raw Cartoons. after that we reach his debut album, 1983. this is then immediately followed by the totally awesome ep called, Reset. after that we have the Los Angeles album and then the amazing, Cosmogramma album. check out the song, "...and the world laughs with you" which features Thom Yorke of Radiohead fame on vocals. and lastly we have his latest ep called, Pattern + Grid World. search these and get to clubbin' or something. dig it...

All is full of...

today was a better day, but i'm still feeling a bit bad. i'm also very tired and hungry. maybe i'll check out the new jack n' the box they opened down the road. anyway, today is wednesday so that means new Top Chef tonight!!! (i have things to look forward to despite how i currently feel...)

i wanted to be a little artsy with today's post. not saying its art school junk or whatever, but today's artist is considered avant-garde and highly unique. i'm talking about the glory that is, Björk.

björk guðmundsdóttir, or better know simply as, björk, is an icelandic singer/songwriter who has been in the music industry since her debut solo album in 1977. she has been nominated for both, grammy and academy awards, and has one several of them. once she dropped her self titled debut, she joined the post-punk band, Tappi Tíkarrass in 1981, left them and then joined The Sugarcubes in 1986, who were also post-punk, but with a more nu-wave/gothic type of style. in 1992 the sugarcubes broke up and björk pursued her solo career, releasing her second album, Debut in 1993. the album became an instant hit in the alternative music world with such songs as, "human behavior" "venus as a boy" and "big time sensuality". this was trumped by her next album called, Post, which became an ultimate smash hit. it even has a spot in the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums Ever Made issue, ranking in at number 373.

in 2007 i got the chance to see björk play at that year's Coachella Music Festival. it was an awesome moment for sure, but i got a text from my buddies telling me to get to the small tent to watch Gogol Bordello. to this day i don't regret doing that. björk is cool to see live, but i'd much rather witness her spectacle in something smaller than a huge outdoor festival. (imho of course!!!)

for her music we have three albums. first is the album, Debut which wasn't really her debut, then after that is the incredible album, Post. and in last place is the album, Homogenic. these three are my personal faves and each one is in order by release. oh, and the video for "all is full of love" was directed by Chris Cunningham who is a genius. enjoy!!!

The Falling Rain...

i need to make this a quick post since i'm going to my little brothers b-day in a bit. i gotta go pick up my grandma, so that's going to take some time. still, i hope today will be fun and full of good memories for once!!! oh, and i hope you all will still check out the Scott Pilgrim series. i finished volume two last night and it was most excellent!!!

for some more 90's nostalgia, let's check out Luscious Jackson.

some of you might think i'm really reaching here for post worthy material, and just going through the bins and bins and bins of old music that's long forgotten. well, it's my freekin' blog and i can post whatever i want too!!! okay, so anyway this all female rock/dance group formed in 1991 in manhattan, new york and were quickly discovered by The Beastie Boys, and were the first act signed to their grand royal label. the girls would all eventually break up in 2000 though...

one thing i will always remember is seeing these ladies play on the show The Adventures of Pete and Pete. it just goes to show you how awesome nickelodeon was in the 90's and how most shows today don't have the testicles to try that still.

bbbbbuuuuuuuuttttt anyway, on to the tunes!!! i'm skipping out their ep and final album for their debut and second full length. first is the album, Natural Ingredients and then the album that blew them up high, Fever In Fever Out. look for the songs, "here" deep shag" and "city song (ny state of the world)" from natural ingredients and "naked eye" "under your skin" and "why do i lie" from fever in fever out. this is catchy, yet sleek and slender music with grooves that make you wanna get laid or hit the dance floor. dig it...

Scott Pilgrim Vs. Oklahoma...

yeah, i didn't got to Municipal Waste last night, but that's okay. instead, i dove into a new comic books series for myself called, Scott Pilgrim. this six volume graphic novel series is made by artist, bryan lee o'malley who is from canada. now, i know i'm just getting my feet wet and considered a noob with this series since i just saw the trailer for the live action movie, but oh man!!! this series is just what i've been looking for!!! it contains all the aspects that i remember from the age of 23 (literally!!!) and somehow, i connect with it better than most recent findings.

oh, and about that movie. it's coming out on august 13th, and it stars micheal cera and elizabeth winstead who looks really awesome in pink hair. i don't know, but for some reason this silly series and movie has got my attention BIG TIME. the movie is also directed by edgar wright who has made a few little things like, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and one of my favorite television shows of all time, Spaced. yeah, so you know this is in the right hands. judging by the trailer, it looks freakishly crazy, but with a sense of heart and drama that is right up there with other goofy things like, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Dragon Ball Z. it's a weird mix of a little bit of everything, but i like those mash ups sometimes. just watch the trailer below to see for yourself!!!

for some other stuff i guess i'll mention some music right quick. you know how i like the 90's so much right??? well here's something to rock your socks off!!! i think you all will recognize this group because they were EVERYWHERE during their moment of shining. yep yep yep, here are the Sneaker Pimps.

i am not ashamed at all for liking these guys (and girl!!!). this trio made some really amazing trip-hop tunes on their stylistic debut album, Becoming X. the story of sneaker pimps goes like this: they form in 1994 in hartlepool, united kingdom with founding members, chris corner and liam howe who recruited singer kelli dayton to finish the group. shortly after this they begin creating music which eventually leads to the their debut album. the album became a huge hit with singles like, "spin spin sugar", "tesko suicide" and of course, "six underground" getting regular airplay around the globe. then after all was settling down the began making demo's for the followup album, but with corner doing more lead vocals. right here is when the band made a HUGE mistake. they asked kelli dayton to leave the group, citing their fear of being lumped with the then fad of trip-hop. (trip-hop, to me, was never a fad because the music is very powerful and has stood the test of time. yes, it's a total 90's thing, but those artists who made the music are still around and very much respected.) oh, and the group broke up in 2003...

the debate as to whether or not the decision to oust kelli dayton will forever be talked about, but for now we have the music as a reminder of a time when things were simple, yet full of wonder. (for us 90's people...) whenever i hear this groups music, i can't help but remember my time during the 90's and all the things i was up to. i also remember the movie, Can't Hardly Wait, and the scene where they play the sneaker pimps and jennifer love hewitt walks in all slow like. (i had a huge crush on her back then...)

so here is the music, or album. yeah, just the one album i've already mentioned will be on here today. nothing against their other works, but i simply do not like them. this is a legit album of catchy and sexy songs. you will instantly fall in love with the stuff on here. opener "low place like home" will get your tongue wet and keep you wanting more and more. try it out and see if you can enjoy a little bit of nostalgia!!! dig it...

Only You...

i'm up early on this sunday, but that only means that i haven't slept all night once again. i've skipped a few days, like usual, so to try and break that habit, here's a post!!! uh... yeah... where do i start??? i have no idea really. this weekend has been okay i guess. not too bad, but nothing that's explosion exciting. the oklahoma thunder lost friday night which was upsetting again, but hey, they tried their best and they really REALLY gave the lakers a hard time. there is always next year and i think we will take it then. yesterday i awoke in the afternoon, a usual routine, and got cleaned up and dressed and then went to norman with the parentals. i got to witness for the first time in my life, the jr miss and regular miss indian oklahoma. wow...

some things have been happening to me recently which has made my mind and soul wander around, trying to figure out what it all meant, or means. i'm an expert at over analyzing matters that probably seem trivial or not even worth mentioning, so there you have it. anyway, after several texts and one phone call, it's come to my attention that i really don't have my emotions under control as well as i thought. this comes as a real hard blow to the chest and brain and head and heart and stomach and hands and feet and eyes and ears and feet and legs and arms and thighs and nose and soul... my body wants to curl up and hide away like a roly poly under a dark rock. i spent the night playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to change the subject and get me thinkin' on how to make better kills and what my next weapon load out should be. it didn't do that much to change the tide...

after almost six hours of non-stop playing, i quit and laid on my bed thinking once again. after some time had passed i checked a random google site on my playstation on dealing with some "issues" i had been pondering on for the better part of the past year or so. there was some solid advice i probably could have gotten from a pan handler, but anyway, it said something to the point like, "do something that you use to do that made you happy, or try out new things, or even go somewhere and explore!!!" here's what i did. i took my ipod and put on some LCD Soundsystem, Chocolate Kiss, Sonic Youth and Jeff Buckley. during each artists selection of songs i chose, i pretended to be the actual band playing in front of an audience. i stood in front of my television and sang the words and did air guitar. yeah, i definitely looked like a total dork, but this made me feel good and it got me sweaty and tired. after all was done, i couldn't go to sleep because it was almost six in the morning and if i tried to sleep then i wouldn't wake up until midnight!!!

i put in a movie to remind me of some things. the movie was, 500 Days of Summer. i already said this before, but dang... this movie really REALLY connects with me. there are so many parts in this movie that i can relate to almost perfectly. it's actually pretty freaky how closely the story and characters are tied together on ideas and facts that also make up some of my life. this is almost down to a T. i'm not going to explain all these parallels because that would take away from it for me and besides i think i might have done that already on an older post.

and so i finally come to this point now. after a quick bible reading, i'm here writing this long dialogue on how i feel. just to mention, there was one piece of advice from that google site that, i believe, is worth mentioning. it said for someone who is hurting to write down their feelings. make lists of the good points and bad points. (not here, no way!!! that's private...) write down something that will make you reflect and possibly get better from. i guess that's what i'm doing here. i'm a college graduate with a bfa in creative writing. one of my goals in life is to write a novel. this blog has been my source of out pour for almost an entire year. it's my escape from the world and yeah, i'm sure millions upon millions of people do the same thing. i'm not trying to win awards here or out goth all the goth kids or out emo all the emo kids. naw, this is just my blog and i occasionally like to post something in it that seems worth the effort.

and for some of that effort, i'm sorry to take so long but anyway, here's Portishead.

this is another trip-hop act that has stood the test of time. along with their contemporaries, Massive Attack, Tricky, Sneeker Pimps, Bowery Electric and Morcheeba, portishead are always considered to be one of, if not, the best of the bunch. trip-hop was a 90's phenomenon, and some might think it has had it's time, but hey, emo is still here and dance music has evolved into all sorts of spastic efforts, so why not trip-hop???

portishead is a three piece group from bristol, england led by lead singer, beth gibbons, with geoff barrow and adrian utley taking the rest of the space. the group started in 1991 and kept going until they went on hiatus in 1999. since most artists who say they are going on "hiatus" never get back together, portishead surprised everyone in 2005 when they appeared and began work on new material. this would all bear fruit and lead to their eventual 2008 album.

this music might seem a bit gloomy for a sunday, but i had meant to post this on friday, so i'm a bit off schedule right now. just bear with me okay??? so, our first album today is called, Dummy. this placed at number 419 on the Rollingstone Top 500 Greatest Album Ever Made issue and i don't disagree with them on that. it's an amazing piece of work and it's something that defined the trip-hop genre. second is their self titled effort and with it came a change in style. the music wasn't as bleak and dark. instead there was a more mellow and lush sound. the groups experimentation with electronics proved to be an awesome effort. and last we have that 2008 album simply titled, Third. this was a polarizing album for sure since sssssooooooo many people were waiting for it's inevitable release. going along with their changing desires and the changing of times, (heh!!!) we have an album that's very radical and unique. their wasn't anything to compare it to that year. it took me by surprise and i had a hard battle when listening to it. it's cool and yet depressing. awesome and yet turtle mellow slow. yeah, so take my words with a large grain of salt, but don't let any of this grammatical fluffy hoop-a-joob fool ya. i really want you all to give this group a listen. they only have three albums and that's not a lot, so give in and try it.

We suffer everyday, what is it for
These crimes of illusion, are fooling us all
And now I am weary and I feel like I do

It's only you, who can tell me apart
And it's only you, who can turn my wooden heart

The size of our fight, it's just a dream
We've crushed everything I can see, in this morning selfishly
How we've failed and I feel like I do

It's only you, who can tell me apart
And it's only you, who can turn my wooden heart

Now that we've chosen to take all we can
This shade of autumn, a stale bitter end
Years of frustration lay down side by side

And it's only you, who can tell me apart
And it's only you, who can turn my wooden heart

It's only you, who can tell me apart
And it's only you, who can turn my wooden heart

We're back, a schuyler story...

yeah, so i'm back home now. my dad is currently sitting in the armchair, watching crappy television and hurting with shoulder pain. surgery is a nasty thing. i'm glad i didn't have to go through it.

okay, so it's been a little fuzzy these past few days, but all is well. i'm currently jammin' some awesome electronic music, so it's something i want to post on. here is, The Future Sound of London.

once again, this is going back to the 90's. mxtxvx used to have this totally awesome show called, AMP, and it was usually on real late at night. it showcased sooooooo many awesome electronic acts for several hours. the future sound of london happened to be one of them. electronic music burst through in the 90's and has evolved so much over the years since. FSOL were one of the pioneers, and every album they release is upgrading the electronic genre. this duo, consisting of garry cobain, and brian douglas, hail from manchester, england. they work in many of the electronic sub-genre's, such as ambient, techno, trip-hop, drum n' bass and dance.

today you will find three of their albums. this is all from the best of their 90's work. and for a heads up, I'M TERRIBLY SORRY FOR HAVING TO USE RAPIDSHARE!!! okay, so the first thing to check out is the album, Lifeforms. this is a double album of experimental ambient techno. it's probably their most famous work and is a masterpiece of electronic music. next is the album, ISDN, followed by the album, Dead Cities. both of these are totally awesome and contain some, still fresh beats. check out the song "amoeba" from ISDN, and the songs, "my kingdom" and "we have explosive" from, Dead Cities. enjoy!!!

Nice weather for ducks...

this is a late night post. i'm gonna go to bed (hopefully) after i'm done here. my dad wants me to get off the computer and i don't want to make him mad... ugh, i hate living here. i want to be on my own again...

i was thinking about this electronic duo all day, so that's who i'm posting on here. the group is called, Lemon Jelly.

the duo started in 1998 and are currently on hiatus, but that shouldn't stop you from listening. you never know when these guys might start back up again!!! they hail from london and make great electronica music with pop flavor and rock styles all mixed in. there is also some brief moments of trip-hop/ambient/dream-pop/and indie all pulled together here-and-there. this is special music i just somehow discovered one normal day and i have been a huge fan ever since.

they made three ep's, which were all collected together to form their first lp titled, Lemon Jelly.KY. after that they made their official debut titled, Lost Horizons and after that their last album to date, '64 -'95. try these out and enjoy!!!

Setting Sun...

what a strange day this sunday has been. i'm back home now, typing this post and currently thinking about what happened to me. you see, i felt rather uneasy as i sat in church today. my chest was under a lot of pressure, and my thoughts were all over the place. it was my anxiety attacking me again and it happens all the time at church. actually, it's been happening to me almost everyday. i'm going to get myself checked out by a doctor somewhere as soon as possible. i need to get to the bottom of this. i'm really believing that my depression situation is being caused by a physical thing. if not, then it must be something else. recently, my personal problems haven't been hurting as much, and those old thoughts that used to plague my mind have been subdued somewhat, but there is still something wrong with me and i'm really tired of it.

my poor dog looks so sad when i give him notice. he has these eyes that just pierce straight through you. he looks at you with want and need. i'm not a good pet owner. i don't spend enough time with the poor thing. he lays on our back yard deck, usually staring at us through the glass door. i sometimes think he will die hating us, hating me especially. i gave him his name. originally it was chewy, because when he was a puppy he was always chewing on objects and biting us on the ankles. dad put a stop to that, and sent him outside. he's grown up in our backyard and over the years has seen it become smaller due to the deck, shed and doghouse that he's scared to use. his name is now chewbacca, and he answers to that. i should take him out for more walks, but i always forget. i'm too tied up in my own world of really bad crap to take notice to this living thing a few feet from this computer. my poor poor dog. i remember the two dogs i had from my childhood. there was otto, the white terrier and chloe, the very protective and pretty doberman. they were fun loving, happy dogs. they always chased each other and barked off strangers and other animals. eventually otto became sick and was put to sleep. shortly after that my parents divorced and we all left that house and chloe too. i hope she didn't hate me in her last moments. so, you might be asking, "why didn't you take her with you???" well, i don't really have an answer for that. were just terrible people sometimes. if you ever have pets, please treat them like you would a loved one, and by that i mean a person. animals know and feel more than you think they do...

here is some old dance music from the 90's that i fell in love with and have been a fan of ever since. this duo goes by the name of, The Chemical Brothers.

this is hard to write with a normal attitude since everything sucks right now, but here goes. the chemical brothers were first heard by me one late late LATE evening on MxTxVx, back when they actually played music videos and were not polluting people's minds with retarded crap aimed at the teenage and young adult demographic. you see, there used to be this show called, Amp, that aired from around 1997 to 2000 or so, and on this program you would get all the latest dance music video's shown from around the world. these stood out to me for their crazy experimental nature, as well as their length that had some of them being over five minutes or so. it was on this show that i first discovered dance/electronica music. artists like, the chemical brothers, Daft Punk, Cornelius, Aphex Twin, Autechre, The Prodigy, Future Sound Of London, Tricky, Goldie and Underworld, among others just as good. this was an awesome time for me when i first began my musical journey, and i hold it very close. the 90's are my favorite time in music, and nothing has topped it.

so, the chemical brothers formed in 1992, and have been performing their own dance music ever since. to this day, they have release over six albums of material as well as several live albums and compilations. they have toured the world over, and often get asked to play several large music festivals, usually during the late night hours. i still listen to these guys today, and it will never get old to me, despite all the hate i sometimes get from those who just flat out don't like techno/dance music. ha ha, oh well, whatever!!!

so, here you will find all their stuff!!! we first start with the debut album, Exit Planet Dust, then we follow that up with one of my favorite albums of all freekin' time!!! this particular album is called, Dig Your Own Hole, and it still ranks as my favorite electronic album of all time as well as favorite album cover of all time. there isn't really that much to the cover, but for some odd reason, i've always been attracted to that black-and-white picture. i'd often try drawing it, and it still inspires me when i take pics from a side angle which is my favorite angle to be shot from. (pictures i mean!!!) dig your own hole also has all their best tracks, like "setting sun" "block rockin' beats" "elektro bank" and "the private psychedelic reel". okay, so in third place is the album, Surrender, which features the awesome song, "how does it feel" which was made into a music video, directed by michel gondry. in fourth place we have the album, Come with Us. this also has some great tracks like, "it began in afrika" and "star guitar", the latter of which was made into a video by gondry again. after that we have two more albums, Push the Button and We Are the Night. i honestly have not listened to those two albums ever, so don't hold it against me if you think they are crap. they both won grammy's for best electronic albums of the year when they came out, so hey, they might not be crap. heh heh ENJOY!!!

Still Stand Tall...

it's the weekend once again. i might go out tonight and hang with a friend, or i might just stay home. i don't know for sure. i'm sort of depressed a little bit which is something that happens all the time and also something i hate very much. ugh...

i guess the music today is a brief reflection of my mood. even though the music is a little down, it's rather quite beautiful and full of soulfulness. here is Massive Attack.

i like trip-hop music. artists like Portishead, Tricky, and Thievery Corporation tend to make me sit back and relax. i listened to a lot of this type of music during college and massive attack were the ones who stood out the most. now i know that this stuff is a bit dated and i remember how mind blowing it all was during the 90's, but still these guys make quality slow jamming music that fits into any mood. (my current moods...) to describe trip-hop would be a little weird. i guess i would say it's the slower beats of hip-hop music mixed with sometimes rock and soul. the guest singers are the usual highlights of the productions and when used, samples from other songs make the ones here stand out even more.

this trio really aren't that grounded into the usual order of members since massive attack is most of the time an artist collective. still, these people are amazing and they keep making music. apparently there will be a new album dropping in 2010, so be on the lookout for that.

today i have my two favorite albums by this group. first is their debut, Blue Lines and second is Mezzanine. yeah, i know i'm skipping several more of their albums, but this blog is really all about my own personal tastes. (i still wonder who reads this stuff...) enjoy!!!

Monday Morning...

i was called at about 6 AM today to go sub at a local high school just a mile or so down the street. the school is brand new and about two years old. it was too clean and for some reason being in places like that make me nervous. yeah, i'm weird sometimes. not that i like to live in filth and be all grunge like, but places with lots of white walls and white tiles make me feel captured and not able to breathe. oh, and i was also on about two hours of sleep. i wasn't planning on being called in to sub that day. well how wrong i was!!! i had to go to 711 and buy a five hour energy shot just to stay awake. i think i would have stayed awake anyway since i was really on my toes the entire time...

so, i had to watch about four class sessions. it wasn't hard to do. not much to complain about except for the third period american studies class. the students would not read aloud and kept on talking and disrupting. yeah, i had to keep telling them to be quiet. constantly... but still it didn't matter because i took many notes and got down to the bottom level of their behavior and left it all for their sick teacher to read whenever he gets back. at least i think that's what will happen. those students might take away the paper i left and there would be no proof what so ever as to the events that took place on monday morning october 26th 2009...

oh, and for the record, these poor kids could not read. at all!!! i had to help them several times when the paragraphs became too hard to read aloud. yeah, this wasn't going to work for me. despite all of this, i was reminded of my choices recently to go into the teaching world. it was almost based entirely on this matter at hand. these kids could not read. out of the six there, one could read good enough while the others sat by the wayside and just became statues of our ever present future leaders... okay, so i might be going overboard on this, but this is exactly what i want to help change.

i'm not to big on the word change since it is used to describe actions that never take place. when i do respect it however, it's when i know for a fact that change can happen. i know i can at least attempt my best to make such a change. i'm not tryin' to be Robin Williams from the Dead Poets Society and make everything magical because that is frankly not real. no teachers out there are like that. if there are they are just copying williams performance.

if i can help one student then i did something. in the words of Ian Mackaye, "at least i'm f****** trying!!! what the f*** have you done???" (yeah, sorry for those not so subtle words...) so despite this day of firsts, i still have the desire to teach. now teaching wasn't my first choice of future careers because back in the day i never had any at all. nope, not one. like i said before, i didn't expect to be alive at this age. and yeah, it's going to be a long road to take, but i think it will be one worth traveling. i have hope and you can't kill hope.

okay, so let's just forget for a minute of all the things i just said and instead check out some music real quick. this is a sort of new band. consisting of four twenty year old's who all met in a london college (they all do...) back in 2005, they slowly started to build up their own hype and much appreciated praise. yes, this group of young folks deserve the praise they get because they simply rock. they are called The XX.

i'm a big fan of minimalism. from the works of Philip Glass to the most recent Radiohead album, minimalism can work as a reminder that sometimes less is more and even less is even more. (huh, what???) you have here two guitarists, a bassist, and a kid on a beat machine acting as the drums. that's it. british rag NME listed this group at number 6 in their top 50 future artists to watch. everyone's favorite indie music alter site, pitchfork, gave the band high regards and even reviewed their debut album with an impressive (according to pitchfork standards...) 8.7.

to describe this band and their overall sound would do them injustice. i can't get it down without going into all the wild tangents on how so-and-so seem to be inspirations and such. if i was forced at gunpoint to say something of that nature i would ask you to take this with a grain of salt and then say something like, a little bit Depeche Mode and a little bit Joy Division and with some Interpol mixed with The Editors and then sprinkled with the trip-hop flavor of Burial and finally slowed down to a melodic pace and drowned out with some heavy cough syrup.

that really is a terrible way to describe them, but i tried my best under awful circumstances. you be the judge and listen for yourself. this band is hyped, but mostly over seas and a little bit here because of pitchfork which is how i actually came to discover them. that was pretty cool by the way. pitchfork got something right.

if they ever come here, which i think they have/are be sure to give them a shot and see their laid back show and groove along to the sounds of a band, who i think, take themselves and their music seriously. here is their only release so far. the self titled album XX.

the future is upon us in the form of kids who can't read...

Mmm Hmm...

today was that day. i have reached my 25th year of living and to tell you the truth i honestly never thought i would reach that age. for some reason i have grown up never really dreaming about being older. i never pictured myself as a teenager and i never pictured myself as a young adult. maybe it comes from a childhood of pain and struggle or maybe it's the fact that i saw lots of movies where the depressing factor went through the roof. (*cough* Land Before Time *cough*)

i wasn't that good...

i thought the bronco was cooler because it was so awesome in The Goonies...

anyway, i feel much better today than i did the day before and deffinitely the day before that. i guess i now am in a certain period where things start to take shape as if it was legos and not duplos. because you know, duplos where for children and legos were for bigger kids... i just hope the legos fit good and make awesome shapes and patterns!!! you get it right???

to help you all get into something you might not have listened to, here is the band Team Sleep. it is the other band that Chino Moreno from the Deftones sings for. if you liked the softer more dream-pop songs that the tones put out then this is just right for you. its sexy, sleezy, druggy, and poppy. i love it so much and i still can't believe i missed them when they did that short winter tour back in 2007 and came here to oklahoma and played at the freekin' conservatory in november and that place only holds about 200 people or so and i was stuck in santa fe new mexico tryin' to hack my way through fiction and poetry classes... ugh, here is their self titled debut and the original demos that were scraped and then the myspace demos. enjoy!!!

I hope you all have a good day...
