In A Constant Heaven...

there is a serious pain my right arm. from the elbow up to the shoulder. those who know me will find this familiar. i’ve had some serious trouble with my right arm ever since i almost threw it out in high school baseball. it’s a nuisance and one that gets under my skin to the point of annoyance. seriously, i haven’t had a good sleep on my right side in over ten years!!! and i prefer to sleep on my side yo!!! ugh, this sucks…

so, last night was a good event. i picked up my buddy from the airport and we caught up quickly. not to sound super cheesy, but it felt like she had been gone FOREVER!!! heh heh, yeah, i’m totally cheesy and i like it!!! this coming weekend should be eventful, what with me having actual stuff to do instead of just laying around the house like my cat joshua… well, there is something i could do that will take some of my time away, but i’m thinking that i should wait a bit longer before diving into that. i’m of course talking about Dead Space 2!!! i just got it tuesday and finally got to use my best buy gift cards from christmas. oh man, this game looks sick!!! it also came with the original nintendo wii game, Dead Space Extraction, which is an on-rails shooter/prequel to the original game. they upgraded the graphics and implemented the new playstation move controller, which i’m now a sucker for. (i’ve played it at mike’s and it’s awesome!!!) so i guess this means i got more bang for my buck. all i need is a move controller and some time to kill and i’ve got an eventful showcase ahead of me. bbbuuuuuuuttttt, i think i’d rather do the important things this weekend like our annual Indian Falls Creek meeting and spending time with kristy. oh, and saturday night Jimmy Eat World is playing here in okc, so yeah, video games can wait. besides, i sort of want to purchase a bigger and better hd tv before getting involved in something as epic as dead space 2…

since i feel a little more happier and happier each day in these new times, i think the music should reflect that as well. for today’s post, i want to focus on a band that was a great find for me back in 2003. they go by the name, The Rapture.

Picturethe rapture are a post-punk/dance/indie rock band from new york city that started back in 1998 in san francisco i think. they quickly gained recognition for their intense, yet catchy and insanely fun live shows. they also arose during the post-punk revival of the 2000’s, alongside other acts like, Bloc Party, Interpol, The Killers, The Strokes and Editors. i usually held the rapture up a little higher because their music has this incredible flow and beat that makes you want to dance and dance hard!!! back in 2007, i finally got the chance to see them live, which was at Coachella. they performed right after LCD Soundsystem in the dance tent and it was a rowdy show. i bopped and weaved like i knew what i was doing and guess what??? nobody cared!!! we were all dancing terribly, but at that moment it didn’t matter because the music was so darn good and the atmosphere was amazing.

as of right now, the band is currently making their fourth full length album and going on as a three piece. i think the future is still bright for them and that their epic has yet to come. and for the tunes, we have four listing here today. first is their debut full length, Mirror, then the ep titled, Out of the Races and Onto the Tracks. next we have their second full length, Echoes, and if you want a great place to start, here would be a good choice. this is my favorite of theirs and it's a mad crazy good time. and lastly we have their third full length, Pieces of the People We Love. yep yep yep, that's it for now!!! grab some and dig it...

Cinnamon Cheesecake Chimichanga...

well, i guess it's time for my first post of 2011!!! this weekend has been great, what, with OU beating UCONN and then me getting two new tattoos. what you say??? YES!!! i got some new ink!!! i now have a total of six tats!!!

my arms aren't usually that dirty lookin'...

ok, so yeah, they might seem cheesy as all get out, but seriously, these two characters are the very first tats i ever wanted. i decided on these back when i was in high school. on my left arm is the bear logo from Radiohead and on my right is the White Pony symbol from the Deftones. these two bands changed my life and got me through some tough times, so i just wanted to show my love. heh heh, i'd forgotten how narly getting tattoos were...

movin' on, i have big plans already in mind for the start of 2011. first off, and most importantly, i want to get better. i've been sick since my last year of college and i'm very tired of it. i'm going to work extra hard on getting healthy and in shape and allowing myself to enjoy life more often. that includes going out, hanging with friends and possibly dating. (if i'm ever so lucky...)

another big plan, and one i've mentioned quite a few times here, is moving. i'm starting my application tomorrow and i'm a bit nervous, but i need to do this. i have to move out of here. i need my own life away from my family's close contact. not to say i'm moving to stay away forever, no. it's just that i need my freekin' space ya know??? shoot, i can't even blast my music here without someone having a conniption fit...

so anyways, here's to the new year and all the exciting things that might be happening!!! oh, and here's to The Roots, for being the music choice on today's post!!!

some might think i completely ignore the Hip-Hop/rap genre, and i can understand that. so far it's been slim pickin's on this here blog. so today i want to change that and post on my ultimate favorite Hip-Hop group, the roots. this crew started back in 1987 and has primarily consisted of founding members, tariq, "black thought" trotter and ahmir, "?uestlove" thompson. they hail from philadelphia, pennsylvania and are considered to be one of Hip-Hop's most cherished and acclaimed acts.

take note that this isn't the same kind of rap music like Lil' Wayne or Lil' Jon. (do those guys even make rap music???) this is straight up soul music. well, i consider it soul, or at least neo-soul. these cats mix in r&b/blues/folk and jazz. oh, and what made me like them in the first place is for the fact that they play their own instruments. yes, this was my first look at a live Hip-Hop group instead of some studio produced mc wannabe. the roots have awesome talent and it shows throughout their long recorded career. i got the chance to see them at Coachella 2007 and they rocked it. awesome set and awesome band. if you like artists such as Mos Deff, Talib kweli, Erika Badu, Maxwell, A Tribe Called Quest and Jill Scott, then you will surely like the roots.

like i said, they have a long recorded career, so i'm going to try my best to post their entire discography here. in first place is their self released debut full length, Organix!. after that came their first release on a major label, which was the ep, From The Ground Up. after that they released their critically acclaimed full length album on a major label called, Do You Want More?!!!??!. next came their second album, Illadelph Halflife, then their most cherished work, Things Fall Apart. (named after the novel of the same name by Chinua Achebe...) shortly after they released The Legendary ep, then their first live album simply called, The Roots Come Alive. (that was actually the first thing i ever listened to by them...) after that the band took some time off and then came back to start their musical takeover in the 2000's. so, first off in 2002, they released the album, Phrenology. following that is the album, The Tipping Point, then Game Theory. the final two albums to list are, Rising Down and How I Got Over and that's about it. oh, and i purposefully left out their live collaboration with Jay-Z and then their latest collaboration with John Legend because i just want the focus to be on them. so, with that i hope you like this and keep an open mind. ah, and be sure to catch them be the house band on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. enjoy!!!

Neon meate dream of a octafish...

you know what??? CHICKEN BUTT!!! oh, and guess what??? (seriously…) I HAD A WONDERFUL WEEKEND!!! oh my gosh yes!!! i’m still happy over it!!! saturday and sunday were the scheduled performances for the native american christmas play, and i rocked it!!! i actually did pretty good and almost my entire family came!!! i’m sooooooo happy that everything worked out like it did. just good times with good people and nice memories to remember forever. i couldn’t ask for anything else.

i know there were lot’s of pictures taken of the cast and crew, and i saw some of them myself, so eventually i’ll get around to posting them on here. just as soon as someone emails them…

i don’t have too much time to write a long diatribe about life’s complications, nor do i feel like it anyway, so let’s keep this short. the artist i want to mention today was just pushed back into my mind after reading the news of his recent death. ladies and gentlemen, i give you, Captain Beefheart.

don glen vliet, better known by his stage name, captain beefheart, was a musical/avant-garde/visual artist who made some of the most unsual, yet amazing music of the 60’s and 70’s. he performed often with his backing band, known as The Magic Band, and in the process, left behind many groundbreaking, landmark albums of pure art. yes art!!!

captain beefheart was a friend of Frank Zappa, whom he often competed and collaborated with. after releasing two awesome albums, the captain and his magic band went in the studio and churned out the groundbreaking double album, Trout Mask Replica. this album is by far his most famous and is ranked at number, 58 in the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums Ever Made issue. and all things must pass, and so it comes with sad news that captain beefheart has passed away. he was battling multiple sclerosis at the time. still, the music he’s left behind will be forever cherished. many artists claim allegiance to the world of beefheart and if it wasn’t for him, they wouldn’t be were they are now. Tom Waits, Sonic Youth, The White Stripes, The Sex Pistols, The Minute Men, Gang of Four and Blondie have all stated their inspiration and admiration for his music, and if you have a good ear, you can notice the subtle touches that are pure beefheart. (heh heh…)

so, to end this, i'm posting one thing here and that of course is the double album, Trout Mask Replica. believe the hype, but be warned, you may not "get it" on first listen. it took me many tries before i understood what they were doing here. aw, a good memory from my college days is flooding back. late night dorm room hangin' while jammin' captain beefheart and trying to write something that didn't suck, only to get lost in the music and fall asleep. dig it...

Happy Halloween People...

today is the day that halloween goes in full force. funny thing though, because last night felt like halloween. all the kids were out trick-or-treatin' and i guess that's because halloween fell on a sunday this year and you know how hard it is for little kids to get up and go to school. despite this, tonight will still be a fun night and i'm very excited because the premier of, The Walking Dead starts around nine or so. it's a new television series on amc that's being directed by the guy who made, The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. just because of that, i believe it will be in good hands.

oh, and before i forget, i just want to go back to this past friday and mention a little bit of it. work was work, but that day was a lot of fun. all the departments got to carve pumpkins and i was picked to do ours. i had a hard time deciding on what to do, but then it hit me. i will make a cartman pumpkin!!!

ha ha i think he looks awesome!!!

so anyway, work ended and i blazed home to change and then head to my moms to pick up my little brother. it was my idea to take him to our church fall festival. he was tired and a bit grumpy, but nonetheless had a good time. it was also fun to see all my friends and family there. i even got to take a picture with my good buddy lexi, who dylan was trying to protect me from. (she was a vampire and you know how them vampires get...) i was also glad to see my best friend mike and his family. good ol' mike!!!

darth vader is posin' and somehow not burning his hand on his lightsaber...

and so the night ended with me going to norman to pick up my Withnail and I... bluray and then hitting the taco bueno to get some munchies. i got to bed at a decent time for once and slept in saturday until around eleven. saturday night was most excellent, what with me giving out tons of candy to neighborhood kids and some weirdo's and then watching OU beat the crap outta colorado. oh, and the food was awesome!!! my mom made chili and grasshoppers and cornbread. (grasshoppers are jalapeno peppers with cream cheese and bacon wrapped around it with barbecue sauce. mmm mmm good!!!) and as for today, well i stayed up too late and missed church, but i guess that's okay. it's not the end of the world. i'll make up for it somehow. until then, i hope everyone of you out there have fun and be safe tonight. there are a lot of crazies out there who want to be extra creepy, so be on the lookout!!!

oh heck, i almost forgot about the music. well, let's not get to moody here and instead relax with some awesome post-rock. this comes courtesy of the band, Tortoise.

tortoise is a wonderful post-rock band that started back in 1990 and are considered one of the best around. they hail from chicago, illinois and have made several groundbreaking albums in the genres of indie/electronic/ambient and of course, post-rock. the band has several members, some of which have been in other influential acts like, The Sea and Cake, Slint and that crazy dude known as, Beck.

today there are two albums i want you to check out. first is the second full length album by the band called, Millions Now Living Will Never Die. and after that we have my personal favorite which is their third full length simply titled, TNT. try these out and enjoy the landscapes. dig it...

Columbus Is Dead...

i'm off work today, but for the wrong reasons. today is columbus day, and according to non-native americans', it's some sort of celebration of which many people get the day off. straight up, there is nothing worth celebrating on this day. columbus represents the beginning of the end for many MANY native americans. he was just the start of the long winded colonization of america and the raping of it's people. as a native american, i find myself never liking this holiday or history. i try to not live in the far far past when it comes to native american struggle because it's too hard to comprehend. oh, and how could columbus "discover" america if there were already people living on it??? anyway, i'm off and i'm thinking a bit deeper right now while typing this. i could write down a lot more things to spew about, but there really is no point. today is just another reason why the world is becoming such a terrible place. the ever present struggle to live each day surrounded by "zombies" and "politicians" is taking it's toll and eventually, we will all be eaten up by our own undoing. still, us native americans are here and we live each day remembering our loved ones and striving to stay alive in an unjust world ready to self implode...

my gosh, i need to chillax for a bit...

...

okay, so in order to get my mind off a few things, i'm going to write about music like i always do. this time were going electronic with an artist named, Flying Lotus.

flying lotus, also known as "flylo", or real name, "stevan ellison", is a young multi talented electronic producer from winnetka, california. he has been performing his own style of music since 2000 and has built a strong fan base and garnered rave reviews for his releases. he is currently on the warp records label which is the home to other notable electronic acts like Aphex Twin and Squarepusher. flylo is also a relative of John Coltrane and Alice Coltrane and cousin to Ravi Coltrane.

his music incorporates the family jazz styles as well as hip-hop beats and glitch music. flylo is often compared to producer, J Dilla, who's instrumental hip-hop beats were ahead of the game way back when. oh, and flylo has also been showcased on adultswim and is often used in their bumper music, though often uncredited.

for the music today i'm kind of going all over the place here with his releases, skipping out on a few ep's and singles, but mostly sticking with the overall available tunes. first two things to check out are his early beat compilations titled, July Heat and Raw Cartoons. after that we reach his debut album, 1983. this is then immediately followed by the totally awesome ep called, Reset. after that we have the Los Angeles album and then the amazing, Cosmogramma album. check out the song, "...and the world laughs with you" which features Thom Yorke of Radiohead fame on vocals. and lastly we have his latest ep called, Pattern + Grid World. search these and get to clubbin' or something. dig it...

Standing In The Sea...

wow, as i type this the time is 7:41 am. that’s freekin’ early for me on a weekday!!! i can’t help it though. my car is sick and dying. the poor thing is up in the years and getting weaker by the day. yesterday the old security system that was factory installed, decided to mess with me after church by not letting me leave. i couldn’t get the darn thing started, so after having my dad come over there and trying to fix it, we both decided to leave it and continue the next day. this is the reason i’m up so early. anyway, it’s not so bad i guess. i'm gonna escape with dad at lunch time to go fix it, so that means i get a few hours off possibly. possibly maybe…

i’m sooooooo tired, that i can’t properly decide on who i want to post about for music today. hmm… let’s shuffle around and see what comes up!!! (one minute… two minutes… three minutes… four minutes… google search… doughnut eating… coffee drinking… still google searching… YES!!!) alrighty, here’s an awesome band called, TV on the Radio.

tv on the radio is a unique indie rock band from brooklyn, new york. they formed back in 2001 and are currently on a year or so hiatus while members pursue other projects. The music they create, to me, is best described as, indie/post-punk/electronic/lo-fi/dream pop/shoegaze. it’s an all around awesome style, and not to forget, but they also incorporate a bit of jazz and soul as well.

i first heard of these guys while watching this show on mxtxvx called, Subterranean. the music video for their song, “staring at the sun” was shown and it made for a fuzzy memory, but one i couldn’t help remembering. i recall looking up the video on the internet and being drawn to it’s lo-fi power and ambiance. that was that, and i’ve been a fan ever since. oh, and i got the awesome opportunity to see them open at a Nine Inch Nails show, which was an experience in itself...

now, for the tunes we have a good amount of things to post, but nowhere near as many as last time. first up is their hard to find, self released album, OK Calculator. (a play on the amazing, Radiohead album...) next we have their first ep and it's called, Young Liars. after that we move to their real, official debut, which is called, Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes. next is their wonderful follow up titled, Return to Cookie Mountain, then finally, we end with their latest called, Dear Science. that's that then there though the thing thinks thoughts that they thrash thump them thingamabobs...
