A bit of love to take the pain away...

i’m not one to get involved with certain things. i usually tend to stay in the darkness, often or not, to be ignored when it comes to issues. this is how i’ve spent many many years of my young adult life living. it’s not that i’m afraid, or confused, or apathetic towards these things, it’s just that i see no point in my opinion of the matter. what are these matters i speak of??? well, you can probably guess to a certain degree, that it’s politics and religion, and you would be correct, but just not 100%. there are way more things i choose to not speak of, and it’s those types of things that constantly plague my mind and make for a very busy, yet useless space of time. time is definitely well spent when you are doing SOMETHING, instead of just sitting there contemplating on nothing. maybe that’s why so many people hate those like me. those in the middle and not sitting on one side. if i do choose to make an attempt at something, i like to do it quietly, and without any notice. much like voting, or NOT VOTING in certain presidential elections. also, why get involved with the herd when your own voice can’t be understood amongst the rabble rabble rabble??? you know, this might all be related to my horror scope sign, which is libra. apparently, (according to some random site…) libra’s are “diplomatic, urbane, romantic, charming, easygoing, sociable, idealistic and peaceable.” but, also according to the site, libra’s have a dark side, and that involves the following:

1. indecisive

2. changeable

3. gullible

4. easily influenced

5. flirtatious

6. self-indulgent

so, according to someone’s own, written account on how my sign reads, i’m an okay person, but have six things that are not so great. sure, i understand that, but really, am i flirtatious??? heck, i wouldn’t even know a girl was talking to me unless she deliberately called my name. i also don’t think i’m too self indulgent, even though i tend to collect a lot of music and dvd’s and games and books and clothes and girls numbers and so on… bah!!! this is all hogwash and not worth wasting my time over. you see that there??? i actually made myself get involved with my own shortcomings!!! i actually did SOMETHING!!! ALL CAPS PEOPLE!!!

uh, yeah… so anyway, for the music choice, let’s jam the drugged out group known as, Spacemen 3. heck, let’s add Spiritualized while were at it too!!!

spacemen 3 were a fuzzy, psychedelic band from rugby, warwickshire, england that formed in 1982 and lasted till 1991. they were considered one of the best space rock bands to emerge in the alternative music scene. they stood out amongst their brit-pop peers because of their unflattering drug use, and lo-fi shoegaze styles. their music was inspired by 60’s garage rock bands like, The Troggs, The 13th Floor Elevators, The Stooges as well as classic punk acts like, The MC5 and The Velvet Underground. spacemen 3 went on to inspire many new acts that followed like, Serena Maneesh, Vietnam, The Warlocks, Blank Angel, Yo La Tengo, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Flaming Lips, and Suntan.

now, following the breakup of spacemen 3, lead singer jason pierce went on to form his band called, spiritualized. the band started around 1990, right when the tensions for his former band were on the breaking point. spiritualized take the drugged out influence of spacemen 3 and send it over the cliff, onto the next level. this is epic space rock, deepened by the psychedelic madness of justin pierce. this all came together on their third album, titled, Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating in Space. the NME voted it, “album of the year” in 1997, and rightfully so. it’s an amazing journey, from beginning to end, that takes the listener to far away places and with heartfelt emotion. the lyrics to the opening song are simple, yet profound and a bit sad. “all i want in life’s a little bit of love to take the pain away…” you know, it’s things like this that bring the listener closer to the source of the music. trying to not read too much into the lyrics of some artists is hard sometimes, but when it’s this bleak and straightforward, it’s worth the effort. spiritualized are still together, playing the sporadic show here and there. if given the chance, go see them!!!

ok, and now we come to the end, and with that, the music. for spacemen 3 we have their second album which is called, The Perfect Prescription. you can tell they had no shame in their drugged out lifestyle. heck, the band's motto was, "taking drugs to make music to take drugs to" which, when mixed with their minimal droning sound, often led for a crazy trip. the perfect prescription was a concept album about the beginning and end of a "trip." if you have ever been on one, then you might know how these things work. heh heh... oh, and as for spiritualized, we have the album i mentioned which is, Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space. simply amazing is not enough to say right here. aaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnnddddddddd sssssssssssssssooooooooo we finally come to the end of this rant and rave and i leave with the hope that you are a bit more familiar with some other music out there. dig it...

All I want in life's a little bit of love
To take the pain away
Getting strong today
A giant step each day
Wise men say
Only fools rush in
Only fools rush in
But i, I can't help
I can't help falling
Falling in love with you

I will love you till I die
And I will love you all the time
So please put your sweet hand in mine
And float in space and drift in time

All my time until I die,
We'll float in space just you and i
And I will love you till I die
And I will love you all the time
So please put your sweet hand in mine
We'll float in space just you and i

Wise men say
Only fools rush in
But I can't help
Falling in love with you

Pressing Matters...

time is of the essence tonight because, by golly, I NEED REST!!! i also want to add that Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives is currently playing, and for some strange reason, i love that friggin' show. i don't know why i love it so, but for some reason, some really strange BIG reason, i just doooooooooooo... (maybe it's because people are doing what they love???)

you know, i love my writing. i'm not saying that in a proud and boastful way, no. what i mean is, i love my writing because it's me talking. i'm trying to get down to the nitty gritty, and it seldom leads to places i don't know the ending to. it must be my own personal therapy. it does help, no doubt about that. still, it's my outlet and it love to use it. the things i see and do are an everyday experience, and sometimes i just gotta write it down. now, i do know that a lot of the times on this blog, i write from a pretty depressing point of view. my excuse for that is just the timing. it's how i felt at that moment. tonight, right now, i feel full and exercised. i'm ready to call it in and get some shut eye, but not before i write something down. that's really all there is tonight. to cap it off, i'm going to be doing something here for the very first time...

and that first time thing is write a music post for an artist that kindly asked me. i have been wondering if this would happen, but i never wanted to kid myself. delusions of grander have led me to terrible places. BUT, such is not the case tonight folks!!! the artist in question goes by his full name of, Kyle Bobby Dunn.

this young musical artist (who could be ian curtis's twin) calls brooklyn, new york his current home and, as it seems, is creating something very profound while submerged by that concrete jungle. to describe his music, i'm going to have to take a trip.

i awake in a barren field, surrounded by large mountains in the distance and rushing water to my right. the clouds slowly pass by without a glance and my arms are soft as they lay beside me on the smooth green grass. i rise up and walk towards the north, not knowing if that actually is the north. the sky changes color, from blue to violet, to green, to red, to orange, to black. i am overtaken by the vast empty space that is now creeping up my body like a sticky shadow. there is no more ground, no more mountains, no more sky, no more nothing. complete darkness with a cold that's colder that cold. i close my eyes to the blank space and await for something to happen. i slowly peel the lids back and see that everything has changed once again. i am now surrounded by a sea of people. they move briskly, not stopping to see me naked. i am naked. the ground is scratchy on my feet and the cars rush wind on my chest. i float along like pollen being carried by the season. the people have no expression, no desires. it's completely normal to me. normal because i am the same way...

ambient music and minimalism go hand in hand. there is something about the simplicity, yet utter relentless focus on the textures that makes one contemplate many things in general. the compositions and loops that reverberate and come back to are what make ambient music so appealing to me. this isn't to say that this type of music is dumbed down, or easy to create. no, because on the other hand, it's simply a matter of knowing how and when to make your move. kyle bobby dunn is surprisingly good. really REALLY good. there is a ton of weight being carried here in the pieces that he has created.

while getting the scoop on this guy, i checked around and found some big named artists he is compared to. i won't go so far as to name drop here, because it isn't really what the focus is. the focus is on the music, and despite my limited range of critique and experience, i believe this to be something very special. this is great headphone music. this is great study music. this is great ignoring music. this is just great music, plain and simple. i really wish i could go further with this, but i'm stopping here. it all boils down to a simple matter of trusting me, and letting your curiosities relish a bit.

now, as for my usual music wrap up, i'm changing that for tonight as well. kyle bobby dunn asked me to not post a download, so i'm going to honor that. instead, here is what he gave me to review, and that was enough to quickly make me a fan. it's a double album called, A Young Person's Guide To Kyle Bobby Dunn. it's being sold through an independent label called, low point releases, and if you are interested, check it out. supporting the artists through such means is an important endeavor, and i still try when i can.

Stopped Up...

well, it seems schuyler has come down with a sickness... (ugh, i hate that silly band who's song that phrase sounds familiar to...) i don't know what it is, but i'm assuming it's just a simple cold, or possibly a flu, so right now i'm at home and typing this. yes, i took a sick day. this type of common illness can probably be treated with some over the counter meds and i think there is plenty of that stuff lying around the house, so yeah, gonna be good as new.

in other news, my dad is currently driving to tulsa to see his favorite band, Rush. i have no actual feelings for that band, and i have no feelings towards their music. i know this makes me sound like a huge jerk, but gosh, i really have no feelings towards their fans either. i don't know why so many people like them. they aren't that great. heck, in my own strange little world, i'd like to say i've seen much better bands play basement shows, but of course that wouldn't matter since no one else was there besides me. i guess it's just a simple matter of taste, and i'm not enjoying the texture their music leaves behind. i think geddy lee has an annoying voice, neil pert is overrated and alex lifeson is just, eh... maybe it's the generation gap, but hey, i like Led Zeppelin as much as my dad does, or did, so i don't think it's that. i try my best to be as open minded to all types of music as i can, but face it, i just don't like the proggy styles of rush. maybe it's just their fans that keep my away, much like how Slipknot and most metal shows in general made me hate them. eh, who knows. certainly not me i guess...

hmm, i wonder what kind of music can help sooth my feeble body and make things better??? i don't think punk or metal will suffice, and neither will all the rest. hmm... and hmmm... and some more hmmmmmmmmmmmmm... WAIT!!! i know!!! how about the music of Brian Eno!!!

brian eno is one of the worlds best producers, period. he's been involved in the music industry since 1970, originally playing with the proto-punk/glam/nu-wave band, Roxy Music, who will get their chance on this blog in the near future. some of eno's most notable work is his producer credits on classic albums by the likes of, U2, Massive Attack, Coldplay, The Talking Heads, Depeche Mode, Devo and James. in, or around 1973, eno went solo and produced critically acclaimed solo albums that pushed the boundaries of electronic minimalistic music, and thus, re-wrote the book on many subjects. he's also credited for inventing the term, "ambient."

for eno's discography, i'm only posting the important stuff that matters most to me. we first start with his amazing debut, Here Come the Warm Jets. this is then followed by the album, Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy). after that we then meet his most cherished work, which is the album, Another Green World. this contains the hit song, "st. elmo's fire" and is also the sort of birth place for his instrumental, ambient textures. after that is the album Discreet Music, which is considered the first all ambient album. next is his final solo album that features his vocals, and it's called, Before and After Science. and lastly, we finally come to my favorite eno releases, which are his four ambient albums. volume one (my personal favorite) is called, Music for Airports. volume two is called, The Plateaux of Mirror, followed by volume three which is called, Day of Radiance, and then, finally, the fourth volume which is called, On Land. try these out and space out while your at it. get to feelin' better...

Contract Health Providerzzz...

today was a monday and wow, i totally felt it's roughness. it was a struggle to get through, and i had many doubts and worry's. still, i managed to survive it and i was awarded with having dinner with my two little cousins who i haven't seen in quite some time. it was so great to catch up and witness how much they've both grown. those two are exceptionally loving and some of the smartest children i've ever known. i'm really proud of those two girls and how special they are. they have both been through a lot over the past year and it's good to have them back home.

so anyway, in schuyler news, i have an important choice to make this weekend. there are two things to do on saturday, one of which is the annual oklahoma city indian clinic powwow and second is the mayhem tour festival. the powwow is a powwow, but they are always fun and a great place to meet old friends. and as for the concert, it's a bit pricey for a tour with a bunch of bands i began to dislike after high school. yeah, there are a few good options like, Lamb of God, Winds of Plague, Chimera, Norma Jean, Shawdows Fall and i guess Hatebreed, but really, been there done that, slip slap paddy whack...

so there comes a time when i must tip my hat to the music that came before my personal choices. the music that inspired those personal choices. (bands duh...) today i want you all to get to know one of those types of bands. these guys were WAY ahead of their time, which makes them awesome. here is Can.

can was formed in 1968 in cologne, germany and were considered one of the first "krautrock" groups to emerge from the then underground scene. krautrock is the genre name for the experimental music that appeared in the late 60's and became it's most popular in the 70's in germany. john peel was an early avid fan of the music and he often jammed the artists in this scene like Can, Faust, Neu!, Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk among others. these bands led to the creation of many important genre's like early electronic and synth based acts. also there was a heavy psychedelic influence mixed with progressive styles as well.

can are really the top dog in this music scene and have inspired many artists that i love like, Radiohead, Joy Division, Taking Heads, The Stone Roses, Brian Eno, Sonic Youth and The Flaming Lips. woo hoo!!! yeah, so in the long period that these guys made music there is a three album arc that is considered to be their very best period. this was when the band was fronted by asian singer, damo suzuki. these three albums are the select choices for today's post and i think that's alright with me. how about you???

well, i don't think you can answer that since you most likely haven't even heard of these guys. if you have, then good for you!!! if not, well now is the time. listen to the future happen from the past. first album is the amazing, Tago Mago, then next we have, Ege Bamyashi and last is the perfect, Future Days. these three albums should be listened to back-to-back and with some good speakers or headphones. dig it...

I just think that room’s to end,
How commend them from their dreams?
Send that money for a rainy day
For the sake of future days.
You better have nothing for me,
You better move year on your face,
You hide behind a borrowed chase
For the sake of future days.

I'm Drone...

i feel a bit sick right now. i think i stressed myself to the point of sickness. it's not the first time that's happened. anyway, i had to get my car fixed which i did and i'm glad to be done with that. bbbbuuuuuutttttt the thing that's stressing me the most is my current job search. i recently applied with with my tribe and i just found out today that there are 15 people who applied including me. i'm going to keep my hope up and my prayers prayed because i really need this job, or at least something. i feel my layers being peeled back almost to the point of having nothing left...

it's still raining here, so the day feels depressing and quiet. this kind of weather can do that to people. for me it's just another by-the-numbers sort of thing. (oh, i'm so full of DRAMA...) ppppfffffttttt yeah, so anyway here's some music to fit the mood, courtesy of Stars of the Lid.

stars of the lid is an electronic/ambient duo from austin, texas. the members are brian mcbride and adam wiltzie. they started their collaboration in 1993 and have been going strong ever since. their songs are largely beatless soundscapes, composed of droning, effects-treated guitars along with piano, strings, and horns; volume swells and feedback fill the gap of rhythmic instruments, providing dynamic movement within the songs. Their sound has been described as "divine, classical drone without the tedious intrusion of drums or vocals". ---according to their wikipedia profile...

if you happen to like artists like Talk Talk, Brian Eno and Labradford then the stars of the lid are right up your skirt. for today i'm posting only one album from the duo. it's their 2007 double album titled, Stars of the Lid and their Refinement of the Decline. it's an amazing collection of music bursting from the seams and ready to be digested by curious and open-minded listeners. ambient music is for the background, so try it out when doing homework, or relaxing, or even when making love while on psychedelic drugs...

Metamorphosis 49...

it's another friday again. i have a few things to sort out as well as finish the final touches on my powwow outfit. we have an awesome powwow coming up on april 17th. it's the OU powwow and it's a good one to check out. i want to get my outfit ready by then, so i have about two weeks left to work on it. my fingers are now crossed...

in other news, here's some music that might not be considered too exciting, but non-the less, fantastic. here's Philip Glass.

music for those who want to ignore music, i consider philip glass to be in that area of expertise. a wonderful, minimalist composer, glass started his work in music by the age of 15. over the years, he has become one with the minimalist style of classical music, but not a fan of the tag. his music has been used in many films, and most recently, nominated for academy awards.

today you will find just one album by the man. it's titled, Solo Piano, and is my personal favorite work from the composer. it's subtle, yet beautiful music that often repeats itself in an ambient sort of way. enjoy!!!

Swamp Bottom...

it's been another long day for me. just to recap a bit, i had a hard time getting to sleep last night. when i eventually dozed off, i entered into dream land and had some very strange things appear. i can't seem to remember them right now, which i hate because some of them seemed significant. regardless, when i dream it's otherworldly and often indescribable, which all dreams usually are. one thing i do remember is seeing someone i love appear in the last dream. it's someone i miss and often think about. strange that when i woke up i happened to have a text from her...

in my dream state i heard music. i remember the tune because it's something very beautiful that always stuck with me. it's a classical piece created and conducted by japanese composer, Joe Hisaishi.

there is a scene in the movie, Spirited Away, that left me in awe at how brilliant it was shot. it's a simple segment in the film where the heroin and her buddy's, ride a train floating on the water. the song during this scene is called, "sixth station" it's a little depressing, but mostly beautiful and wonderfully shot. the landscape travels past at a good speed, but not so fast that we can't see what's in the distance. it's little things like that that make life better than what it is. it's inspirational and thought provoking. it sometimes feels like nobody take the time to stop and observe. i do that a lot. probably too much!!! lol

joe hisaishi started his career in 1974 by doing the music for a short animated program. he arose to fame with his scores for most of hayao miyazaki's movies. today i'm posting my two favorites, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. both of the soundtracks are great collections of classical work, along with some minimalism and brief electronic moments. the first album contains some really epic, sweeping scores that make you picture huge places and huge ideas. it's lush and organic in it's approach. and for the second album, it takes a seat back and resides in it's own, unique, style of minimalism music. there are whisper soft parts and intense roller coaster adventures. it's all great work and complements the movies very well. so, i hope you enjoy these albums and if you haven't, go see these two films NOW!!!
