Sinus Problems...

yeah, i'm stopped up again. despite the totally awesome weekend, i was sick almost everyday. at first i thought it was a cold, but i then began to notice it only being my nose and head. congestion is one of the most annoying things ever... so, last night my friend told me he got the new call of duty game, so i got online and played a few rounds with the guy. once i got to the main playrooms i checked my score and noticed that i was no longer on the very top of the list!!! i got bumped down two places!!! i ended the night in the wee hours of the morning, claiming my top spot once again, but only by a few thousand points. i know it will be beaten again, so i'm just getting myself ready for the onslaught of long hours playing call of duty. (i'm such a nerd...)

i don't really know what to post for music today. usually i post something that has been recently listened to, or just something that crossed my mind, but today i'm out of ideas. hmm, what have i not talked about in a long time, or not at all??? hmm... give me a second here...

do any of you like a little jazz music??? i certainly do and when i think of jazz there is only one artist that comes to mind. the amazing Miles Davis.

probably the most influential jazz musician to ever live, miles davis was way ahead of everybody out there doing jazz at the time. now, i know that jazz isn't the most accessible music known to man, but once you let yourself go and you get into the depths of it, you begin to feel the coolness of it all and the pure genius that the music entails.

miles davis was first and foremost a jazz player, but he was also a bandleader and composer. most of his works were all done by the man himself. i first got into davis back in the early 2000's after reading about him in the rolling stone top 500 greatest albums. (i often quote that issue...) his album, Kind of Blue, was in the top ten greatest albums, so i had to go check it out for myself. to be honest, i wasn't that impressed at first, but after some time i began to understand. it was in those subtle, quiet moments that i listened to the album and sure enough it became an addictive medicine for me. i sometimes put long pieces of music in the background while i do my work or anything for that matter. this album was always worth listening to whenever the time was right.

miles davis went on to work with a number of latter well known musicians like, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Cannonball Adderley, and many many more. davis was proficient in the 50's, 60's, and 70's. in the latter he started to go electric end experiment with his music. this was his most artistic period and remains his most influential. sadly, miles davis passed away in 1991 from a stroke. still though, the man made music for many many years and it still lives on like the legend himself.

so today i'm gonna post my personal favorites (all of the music is my favorite!!!) and just a warning, these files are quite large, so it may take some time before it all finishes. first off is the amazing album Kind of Blue and second is the double album which is totally crazy and psychedelic, Bitches Brew and third is Sketches of Spain and coming in fourth and last is the unappreciated and double album On The Corner. this last album was panned in its time, but is now considered to be one of the most influential albums in modern electronic music, post-punk, hip-hop, and drum n' bass. check these classics out and enjoy the free spirit of jazz.

I'm Back...

wow, what a great holiday weekend i had. i went down to choctaw country which is southeast oklahoma and spent some time with my step mothers small family. they are all really great people and so so nice. we arrived thursday afternoon, setting up the new trailer at the choctaw casino camp grounds. dad just loves that new trailer!!! later that afternoon, we arrived at at my step mothers sisters house and had are fill of delicious thanksgiving food. the sweet potatoes, and chocolate cake was the best!!! that night we all went, minus dad, to sherman texas and caught a movie. i watched the new wes anderson movie, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and it was delightful!!! this might be my next favorite wes anderson film besides Rushmoore!!!

oh boy, on friday we got up early and had breakfast and then went to dallas to shop at the malls. we first stopped at this burger place called fuddruckers i think, and i had the buffalo burger which is now the best darn burger i have ever had in my entire life!!! holy crap, it was soooooooo gooooooooddddddd!!! after that awesome lunch we arrived at this mall called something i can't remember, and shopped for a few hours. i got a new pair of pants and the God of War Collection for my ps3. i totally ranked in that day!!! later that night me and my dad went to jack in the box and had a few of those 99cent tacos. they were great and worth it because the only time we get to have those is when we go out of town!!! we ended the night by getting a couple of blizzards from dairy queen and watching JFK on the tv in the trailer.

okay, so saturday was a long one. we got up and made breakfast again and then this time me and dad went to a smaller part of the lake area here in oklahoma called texoma which is right there in the choctaw area. dad has an old buddy from his city job days who lives there near the lake. we went and hung at his house watching the OU football game, then we went to the lake and fished for several hours. we caught about seven fish, which is actually not the regular there. most of the time we catch over 20 fish, but it was a cold and windy day, and the little buggers just weren't biting. lol

fish like my scruff and army shirts...

so after that the day became night and the annual choctaw powwow started at the events center. we hung out there all night, watching the dancers and seeing old friends. it made me a little jealous that my fancy dance outfit wasn't ready yet, but in time it will be. (new years eve this year!!!) my step mom got 2nd place in her category and dad lost 40 bucks at the casino, so in all it was a great night. i fell asleep watching Goodfellas in the trailer. ha ha

so today is sunday and we left the south and came home. as i quickly type this dad and perrin are dropping off the trailer and i'm about to finish here. soooooooo, i guess i will now do a small music post. i want to hype this band solely based off the name and lyrical content of just one song by them. the song is called, "let's get out of this country" and the band is called Camera Obscura.

this is an indie pop band that formed in glasgow scotland back in 1996. they have now released four albums have toured the world over. lead singer tracyanne campbell has a great soft voice that is unique all its own and makes the music flow even better. the song i mentioned has lyrics which make me want to get up off my butt and head out the door. i jammed this song today as i was coming back home from the trip, slightly wishing i could re-live the days i just had. i really haven't had this amount of greatness in a long time. i know that with greatness can come something to knock it down because it's a reminder that not all things can be great. i know that of course, so i have myself prepared for when that sort of thing happens. i'm just thankful for the time i got to have that was great. it's so precious to me now. so anyway, here is the album with the same name as the song, Let's Get Out of This Country. enjoy, and please try to get out of your homes once in a while!!!

Let’s get out of this country

I’ll admit I am bored with me
I drowned my sorrows and slept around
When not in body at least in mind
We’ll find a cathedral city
You can convince me I am pretty

We’ll pick berries and recline
Let’s hit the road dear friend of mine
Wave goodbye to our thankless jobs
We’ll drive for miles maybe never turn off
We’ll find a cathedral city you can be handsome I’ll be pretty

What does this city have to offer me?
Everyone else thinks it’s the bee’s knees
What does this city have to offer me?
I just can’t see
I just can’t see

Let’s get out of this country
I have been so unhappy
Smell the Jasmine my head was turned
I feel like getting confessional
We’ll find a cathedral city you can convince me I am pretty

What does this city have to offer me?
Everyone else thinks it’s the bee’s knees
What does this city have to offer me?
I just can’t see
I just can’t see

Should i stay or should i go...

tomorrow i'm leaving for the holidays. i haven't been out of town in a while, so this is perfect timing. today i want to make a big post because i won't be able to have access to the internet for a few days. i hope all of you out there who might read this blog have a wonderful week and time off from work or school. be sure to eat lots and lots of good food and enjoy the company of others.

okay, so this next band is one of my favorites. they are totally awesome and use to hang on my wall in poster form during college. they were at the start of the late 70's early 80's punk movement and are often considered to be the best in many circles. i know that when compared to the other punk bands of that time, these guys stand out as being the best. (in my humble opinion of course!!!) here for you to enjoy is The Clash.

what is it about these guys that makes them so amazing??? well for starters they just rock. it's as simple as that. while their peers may have been all over the place in their punkness, the clash went aside and just made great music. while i could hum along with The Ramones and The Sex Pistols, the clash made actual songs that got stuck in my head for days on end. whenever i discovered their masterpiece double album London Calling, i fell in love with the entire thing. just like the other days post on The Minutemen and their double album Double Nickles on the Dime, the clash's london calling is just as amazing, if not more so because every freekin' song on that album is awesome. there is not a bad one in the bunch. i can't skip anything because they are all good!!! how many artists can you say have done that huh???

the band formed in england around 1976 and were part of the first wave of british punk. they played with styles ranging from punk, to dub, ska, reggae, funk, rap, and even rockabilly. for most of the bands career, the membership included lead singer joe strummer, lead guitarist mick jones, paul simonon on bass, and nicky headon on drums. headon left the group in 1982 and eventually mick jones as well the following year. the band recruited replacement members and played until their breakup in early 1986.

in november 2002, the rock and roll hall of fame announced that the clash were to be inducted. the original members wanted to reunite to play a few songs in honor of being selected into the hall of fame, but paul simonon refused due to the bands original legacy of not playing for such an expensive organization. in december that same year, joe strummer died from a heart defect which put a stop to any possible reunions for the future. in march 2003, the original remaining members along with those who came later all shared the stage during the ceramony.

the bands legacy still lives on today. rolling stone honored them by stating london calling as "the best album of the 80's". it is ranked at number 8 in the Top 500 Greatest Albums by rolling stone as well. still today, they are often called, "the only band that matters", and with that comes many agreements by people. they did matter and they left us with a legacy of great music.

here today is their entire discography minus their final studio album and a few live albums. first is their self titled debut, then second is Give'em Enough Rope. coming in third is the double album masterpiece, London Calling and then the triple beast of an album which found the band going in all sorts of directions but none the less amazing still, Sandinista!. and finally, in last place is their swan song, Combat Rock. get these now and jam them all because music doesn't get much better than this!!!

Music changed our lives...

Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story is on tv right now. i remember seeing this with my dad many years ago. it was quite fun, and also sort of mysterious because the death of bruce lee is still a mystery in some ways. i really liked how they portrayed bruce as a normal person who makes mistakes and is not the most perfect person as many might think. yes, he was the best martial artist ever, but in this movie you actually see him get a few punches to his face often, which we all know is quite possible because he wasn't perfect. but still, wow!!! that man sure could whup some butt when he needed to, and in this film it showcases that exceptionally. oh, and the main star of the film is asian actor jason scott lee who portrays bruce lee. i like this actor solely based off the wonderful and terribly underrated movie Map of The Human Heart. that is a film you all should go searching for.

okay, well the first time i heard the band i'm about to mention was always during the opening of the show Jackass. the song is called "corona" and the band was called The Minutemen.

lead by guitarist d. boon and followed by bassist mike watt and drummer george hurley, the minutemen were one of the odd ones out of the hardcore punk bunch simply because they didn't play to any of the same styles as their peers did during the 80's. most songs were short, never really going past two minutes and such. the band's name doesn't come from their short song lengths, but from the minutemen of the colonial past as a sort of joke on them and a right-wing reactionary group from the 60's.

in 1984 the band released the stellar double album titled Double Nickels on the Dime on greg ginns sst label. the album featured 45 songs with themes ranging from the vietnam war, racism in america, and the working class experience and linguistics. the album also showed just how diverse the band was when playing thier music with styles such as funk, country, jazz, and spoken word. even though the album and band have a cult following, they haven't really been known as well as they should have. the album mentioned was also included in the Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time issue and ranked number 411 respectfully.

in december 1985, after a tour with then emerging band R.E.M., boon was killed in a car accident and the band stopped after that. they were in the beginning stages of making a triple album with new songs and live tracks, but never got to it after the death. mike watt and george hurley wanted to stop playing music, but after being encouraged by minutemen fan ed crawford, they all joined together and formed the band fIREHOSE. they did that for a few years releasing some albums as well as watts own solo material. in 2003 watt joined with the legendary punk act The Stooges and has been playing with them since.

here today is their amazing masterpiece, Double Nickels on the Dime in its entirety. you all much check this out if you have never before because this is some stellar material and is an inspiration for those who want to diy, or do it yourselves.

Keep your mind open...

this past weekend i watched a terrific movie around 1am in the morning. originally i thought it was that sort of sequel to Jumanji, which i think is called Zathustra, but as it turns out it wasn't. instead it was a little movie called The Bridge to Terabithia. i was hesitant at first to watch this kiddy affair, but that all soon changed as i gave it my time and was rewarded with a genuine heartfelt movie about adolescence and growing up facing life's problems and tribulations. the child actors were very good and the adults complimented them easily. i was taken aback towards the end when tragedy struck and hit my nerves like a sword made of ice. i couldn't believe what just happened!!! it was so sad that it actually made me shed a few tears. i haven't had a movie do that in a long time. after seeing this flick i had to see what people thought of it. to my surprise, many actually like it. to point out though, the early trailers for the movie really didn't showcase how the film actually is. i think the producers (the mouse...) tried to market the film as an alternative Narnia type movie when in reality it isn't. if you want to see something great for once, i highly recommend the bridge to terabithia.

okay, so today i want to step back in time again and visit the beggining of punk once more. last time i talked about The Velvet Underground, so this time i think it's gotta be about the band Television.

here's one of those first to come about during the 70's. after the velvet underground, the influences came and one of the many to sprout up was television. they formed in 1973 in new york city (most of these early punks seem to be from there...) and were actually the first band to get hilly crystal to let them play at cbgb's. they even erected the first stage there!!! never getting huge here in america, they blew up in europe and garnered most of their fan base there. hangin' with their contemporaries like Patty Smith, The Ramones, Blondie, and The Dead Boys, television were often the odd ones out of the bunch, even getting the name, "the grateful dead of punk". this name comes from their excessive use of guitar noodling/jamming on stage. after just three albums the band broke up in 1978, sporadically reuniting in much later years.

there is only one album for me to post since this is the only album i listen to by them. placed at number 123 in rolling stones 500 Greatest Abums of All Time, here is their debut record titled, Marquee Moon.

Weekend Morning...

well not really. it's actually about 4 pm right now, but i was pretty much up all night anyway. i just ate a quizno's sandwich and it was awesome. try the double cheese, cheese steak. it's the bee's knees!!!

i'm not gonna post tomorrow since i will be busy all day, so right here right now is a mega post of some sorts. well, it's not really that big, but i want it to be special since the music i'm writing about is special stuff. for those who get pretty deep into punk there comes a time when certain artists get mentioned when the history of the genre is discussed. there are the top three that always get mentioned like The Clash, The Sex Pistols, and The Ramones, but if you go back even further there are some more that i think are even better than those. these few artists came from the 60's which we all know was the birthing of most modern rock music with all sorts of ideas going in all sorts of directions. a few artists to mention would be the MC5, The Stooges, and the one band for today's post, The Velvet Underground.

let's see, hmm well i guess i'll start with the dates. from 1965 to about 1973 this band wrote, recorded, and performed music that was so sparse and out there that they immediately stood out amongst all the hippy acts of the time. often playing during andy warhols "exploding plastic inevitable" events (he was their first manager) the band forced lots of feedback with spastic freekout touches and lyrics that weren't quite as sunny as most would like. lead singer lou reed wrote songs dealing with personal issues such as drug addiction, "heroin" and other topics like prostitution, sadism and masochism. not to glorify these topics, but when heard now it all seems pretty tame compared to what's now considered to be of bad taste, so it' no wonder why the music these people created was so controversial back then. i still like the line in the movie "the doors" where keyboardist ray manzarek described the new york underground of the 60's, including andy warhol and the velvets as "vampires".

the first album released by the band is one of the most recognizable pieces of art created. all done by warhol, the banana cover ("peel slowly and see...") was controversial as well. (everything is and was...) this is the only album with german singer Nico on collaboration. after this she split to do her own music which is also wonderful, and the velvets moved on making three more albums before splitting up. lead singer lou reed went on to have a great solo career as well, releasing stellar albums like the totally awesome Transformer and Berlin (another post!!!)

in later years there would be feeble attempts at reuniting, but they would never work. it wasn't until recently, that i heard news of former band members getting together for a discussion. lou reed along with bassist doug yule, and drummer maureen tucker will be getting together in new york at the new york public library on december 8th to talk with journalist david fricke about the bands legacy and how they made such an impact in rock music. of course news of this magnitude can only start the speculations as to what it will lead to. maybe a few shows around the us and over seas??? huge festivals like Coachella or Bonnaroo??? who knows what will happen. all i can say is that it's awesome to hear about this and one can only hope as to what can possibly take place.

here right now is their immediate discography minus a few live recordings and a latter album that was just terrible and not really a part of the band at all. first off we have the masterpiece in modern rock, The Velvet Underground and Nico, and then for second place we have the harsh in your face White Light/White Heat, and then third is the self titled album minus nico of course, and last but not least, my personal favorite, Loaded. be sure to check these out for some classic rock/punk before there ever was any. listen to lou reed sing his heart out in "sweet jane" and listen for the band showing their love in "rock and roll" and last, be sure to listen carefully as one man's addiction shows the surreal beauty behind it in "heroin". (yeah, maybe...) oh, and if it wasn't for the velvet underground, The Strokes wouldn't have anybody to rip off!!!

I don't know just where I'm going
But I'm gonna try for the kingdom, if I can
'Cause it makes me feel like I'm a man
When I put a spike into my vein
And I'll tell ya, things aren't quite the same
When I'm rushing on my run
And I feel just like Jesus' son
And I guess that I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know

I have made the big decision
I'm gonna try to nullify my life
'Cause when the blood begins to flow
When it shoots up the dropper's neck
When I'm closing in on death
And you can't help me now, you guys
And a
You can all go take a walk
And I guess that I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know

I wish that I was born a thousand years ago
I wish that I'd sail the darkened seas
On a great big clipper ship
Going from this land here to that
In a sailor's suit and cap
Away from the big city
Where a man can not be free
Of all of the evils of this town
And of himself, and those around
Oh, and I guess that I just don't know
Oh, and I guess that I just don't know

Heroin, be the death of me
Heroin, it's my wife and it's my life
Because a mainer to my vein
Leads to a center in my head
And then I'm better off and dead
Because when the smack begins to flow
I really don't care anymore
About all the Jim-Jim's in this town
And all the politicians makin' crazy sounds
And everybody puttin' everybody else down
And all the dead bodies piled up in mounds

'Cause when the smack begins to flow
Then I really don't care anymore
Ah, when the heroin is in my blood
And that blood is in my head
Then thank God that I'm as good as dead
Then thank your God that I'm not aware
And thank God that I just don't care
And I guess I just don't know
And I guess I just don't know

I'm banned in okc...

with heavy sleep comes bad dreams. at least for me sometimes... i slept for a very long time last night and today, waking up around 4 in the afternoon. i hate doing that!!! well always towards the end of my sleep i tend to dream. i guess it's the r.e.m. mode that happens, but whatever the case, my dreams end up being weird and scary. i don't want to dive into what the dreams were about, but i always wake up feeling a bit queezy and sort of self aware of my surroundings and the people in them. it's all ends up feeling like another dream. one where i'm awake, but still asleep if that makes any sense...

to continue my old school punk mood of late, here is probably the most excellent of musicians that punk had during the 80's scene. i want you all to know a little bit about the Bad Brains.

this band was always considered by many to be the best out there. these guys could shred and to make it even more awesome, they were all black!!! why is that awesome??? well in an almost all white scene, this band stood out on the top not just because of their minority status, but because of their ferocious style of playing music. forming in 1977 in washington dc, these guys were originally a jazz fusion ensemble before turning towards punk rock. they built their original fan base in the dc area often playing with bands like Minor Threat, The Void, and Scream.

besides the punk influence, the band also delved into reggae styles with songs such as "i luv i jah" and "leaving babylon". in later years the band slowed their pace and began to explore more mysterious styles of music. adding to that was inner band drama and the harsh lifestyle of the time that led to the eventual break-up of the bad brains. over time there were numerous reunions, but none really captured the band as they once were back in the day. still though, like always, we have the music to listen to and help us remember a time long gone.

here today is one album to check out. it's the self titled debut by the bad brains. often considered to be the best album in punk ever made, the self titled debut showcased the band in all their brutal glory. those who saw them back then still hold their experience up high. even artists such at The Beastie Boys, claim the bad brains as major influences. yes, these guys are still talked about and still loved. here is the music for you to listen for yourself.

I make decision with precision
Lost inside this manned collision
Just to see that what is to be
Perfectly my fantasy

I came to know with now dismay
That in this world we all must pay
Pay to write, pay to play
Pay to cum, pay to fight

And all in time,
With just our minds
We soon will find
What's left behind

Not long ago when things were slow
We all got by with what we know
The end is near. Hearts filled with fear
Don't want to listen to what they hear

And so it's now we choose to fight
To stick up for our bloody right
The right to sing, the right to dance
The right is ours... We'll take the chance

A peace together
A piece apart
A piece of wisdom
From our hearts

My head really hurts...

so today i got to sub again. this time is was most excellent!!! i subbed a p.e. class for first, second, and third graders at a local elementary. it was soooooo much fun!!! those little kids were adorable and behaved very well. i actually had more fun working with these children than i did the high school kids, not that they weren't any good, but these kids at least listened to me.

since i posted on Minor Threat the other day it reminded me of another famous hardcore band that is held up in high regard as well. here for you is the legendary Black Flag.

if there was one band back in the 80's that made a movement happen, it was black flag. forming in 1976 by original lead singer keith morris and guitarist greg ginn, the band started out by practicing several hours everyday in the poorest conditions for people to live. most of these punks lived in community squats, barely able to afford food and clothing. still, despite such life styles, these guys played for the music they created and toured their butts off across america paving the way for future bands to follow. they pretty much wrote the book on being a professional band and living and doing their art on a budget.

ginn formed the label sst records which has gone off to become one of the foremost leading independent labels in the world. artists such as The Meat Puppets, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, Descendents, Minutemen, and Husker Du were just a few of the many who formed the roster of the label.

every black flag record was released on the label and still are today. the epitome of the "d.i.y." culture was formed from people and artists such as black flag and is in full force today. like many out there say, if it wasn't for the elders who came first, there wouldn't be anything like it is now. (i'm talkin' about punk rock of course!!!)

in 1978 black flag released their first ep titled Nervous Breakdown. this was the first recording with morris on vocals and the last as well. on the start of their second release for the album Jealous Again, morris quit the band going on to form his own amazing hardcore band The Circle Jerks and singer ron "chavo" reyes joined in and became the second singer for black flag. in later years chavo would quit the band during a gig and a fan named dez cadena joined up and started to sing for the band until his vocal chord became wrecked and he switched to guitar instead. on an east coat gig the band met with longtime fan henry rollins and during their set they asked him to join on stage and sing the song "clocked in". after the wild and amazing performance, the band asked henry to become the permanent vocalist. this is the black flag that the world became known about.

right after henry joined, the band began work on their first ever full length album. now known as Damaged, the band hit the roof and toured even more and became a hardcore powerhouse. if other hardcore bands got to open for them it became an honor to do so. henry rollins became the center man for constant beatings and insults. many punks did not like this new younger and meaner lead singer. after some time and member changes the band decided to hang it up in 1986. in the end though, the band has left a huge legacy and several releases under their belt. not many bands, even in the mainstream, can claim that.

okay, now for the music i'm going to keep it simple and only post two things. both have been mentioned already, but here they are again. first is the Nervous Breakdown ep and second is the Damaged lp. these two albums showcase the best of black flag and my personal favorites. so with that it's time to suit up and rock the house!!!

In My Eyes...

the weather has finally changed from nice and breezy to flat out cold!!! it happened over night. the wind started to fly faster and the air became much much colder and wet. last night i went out to grab a few of those cheap pizzas from little ceasars and it was misting!!! we all know here in oklahoma, that when mist is combined with the chilly weather sleet begins to form, so that means the roads become slippery!!! i'm gonna go ahead a predict another winter ice storm will happen. it always does and it's really amazing to see everything iced over. but it's also dangerous too!!!

so as i was trying to sleep last night i kept messing with my ipod and i happened to stumble upon my favorite punk band. i totally forgot about them for some reason, but now it's all fresh again!!! here is the best hardcore band to ever exist (in my opinion...) Minor Threat.

i mentioned these guys before in my huge Fugazi post from way back. well here they are finally. it's great to discover old bands and feel as if it's something new again. i had forgotten just how amazing these young dudes were when playing their simple, yet out of this world punk tunes. forming back in 1980 in washington dc and then breaking up in 1983, the band was short lived but left a mark on punk music in general and a formula for bands to follow. they are credited for starting the underground movement "straightedge" which each member followed. straight edge is the idea of living life without drugs, alchohol, and premarital sex. yes, it's a hard life for many to live and there are some out there who can do it with humbleness, but there are also those who pretty much rub it in your face. in later years the movement became something called "hardline" which was an entirely different idea from the original thought of straightedge. this movement became militant and several of those who followed hardline got into trouble for attacking those who do the opposite of straightedge at the old school punk shows. and even in the much more latter latter years we get this stuff out there called FSU, or "friends stand united" which has been covered in several local news programs and even cosidered to be a gang movement.

so, all of those things came out of this one band. they take responsibility for their songs and what they stood for, but they never embraced the then and even now, current violence at punk shows. this is what led minor threat to disband and then the follow up bands Embrace, Rights of Spring, and Fugazi to form and pave the way for music that wasn't really the same. the rest they say, is history.

here for you is the complete discography of minor threat. every song they made is right here in one album. this is very fast straightedge hardcore punk music. check it out and listen to a bunch of young, sober, and pissed off kids making music with ideas.

you tell me you like the taste
you just need an excuse
you tell me it calms your nerves
you just think it looks cool
you tell me you want to be different
you just change for the same
you tell me it's only natural
you just need the proof
did you fucking get it?

it's in my eyes
and it doesn't look that way to me
in my eyes

you tell me that nothing matters
you're just fucking scared
you tell me that i'm better
you just hate yourself
you tell me that you like her
you just wish you did
you tell me that i make no difference
at least i'm fuckin' trying
what the fuck have you done?

it's in my eyes
and it doesn't look that way to me
in my eyes

Substance Over Style...

well i got a call just a little while ago to sub, but when i answered and entered my pin number it kept denying me. i must have entered my pin over four times before the line cut off completely. mind you this is not the first time this has happened, but it is the first time i have been cut off and not able to get through. i dialed the substitute hot line to see if i had any offers on my account and there were none. so yeah, i once again missed an opportunity to sub again. i swear i really tried this time, but alas, i guess it was just not to be... again!!!

i'm gonna make this a short post so here is the music. this is a band that many have been gettin' into for a few years now. of course many would probably say it's because of the bands image. well that's bollocks for sure because this band actually has talent and yes, they also have an image. an image that is very retro non the less. (that's some big hair kids!!!) anyway, here are The Horrors.

i have been pluggin' this band to many of my friends for years now. i got into them after reading a very small paragraph in rolling stone about their video for the song "sheena is a parasite". it was directed by chris cunningham who makes some of the most intense and artistic music videos i have ever seen. (Squarepusher, Portishead, Autechre) the song is relatively short, but it's also fast and groovy. oh, and there's tons of strob lights and some grotesque octopus monster that explodes from the inside of a woman in the video who also happens to be actress samantha morton.

oops, i forgot to mention a brief bio. um, well the band started in 2005 and they all hail from england, home of fish and chips. to describe their sound i would have to say 60's style garage punk. similar old school artists like The Seeds, The Sonics, and Radio Birdman and more modern garage punks like the criminally underrated The Mummies. you can also here other artists like The Birthday Party and Gun Club. this all changed of course once their second album dropped...

let's start right here with the discography. first is their simply short ep which is self titled. this was the first taste of the band before their debut lp came out. it's an awesome little ditty with great tunes and of course the song "sheena is a parasite". next is aforementioned lp titled Strange House. this album shreds with that classic garage punk feel. it's loud, noisy, and full of spunk arrogance. i love it!!! okay, and now the last album and most current by the band is my personal favorite and one that separated the band from what they once were to who they are now. the album is Primary Colours. so, what exactly happened to the band once this album came out??? well for starters they matured into full fledged musicians which they always were, but just not to the point of showing it very well. this album showcased the band going into a more darker tone and embracing old school 80's nu-wave artists like Joy Divison and Depeche Mode. just to please everybody, i will also say that this album reminded me of many more artists like Neu!, The Editors, Interpol, The National, Magazine, Can, Modern English, My Bloody Valentine, and Slowdive.

just to show you what i mean, here is a video for the song "sea within a sea"

yes the band went all out and made a very very good album right here. i love the shoegaze influence and downbeat of nu-wave throughout the album. oh, and chris cunningham was a producer as well!!! so now you know and the more you know the better you are!!! listen to these jams and collectively freak out!!!

If You're Listening...

The Doors is on television at the moment. what a trippy movie that was. i personally love oliver stone films (Platoon, Wall Street, Any Given Sunday) and this particular one always sits on the tip going either way depending on my current mood. as of right now, the movie is doing just fine because i'm about to eat and i'm also blogging. what always strikes me about this film is how much stone made the scenes filter with excess use of drugs. it all flows like a crazy trip and adding to that is the wonderful music by the doors themselves. i know oliver stone was a 60's man. he went to vietnam and came back home to what we all know was a different world, a different america. needless to say, this was always one of the few val kilmer movies i liked besides Thunderheart. ha ha and i guess i can say that it now stands as one of the classics of cinema. oh, The Salton Sea was another awesome val kilmer flick.

let's skip ahead to the music now. the food my dad is cooking is just about ready!!! here is an old school emo band from the 90's that made one of the first leaps to the majors which alienated a lot of older fans, but made many many new ones. i'm talking of course about Jimmy Eat World.

this band started in 1993, forming in mesa arizona. they played local shows then began to tour finding other emo/indie type bands with similar styles and feelings towards the music. unlike most of the emo bands i post on, these guys are still around!!! they have released six studio albums and are currently working on their seventh. i'm sure most of you know who these guys are based off their extremely catchy single "the middle" and the video that accompanied it showing lots of teenagers in their underwears, but whatever!!! too many fans go far back to their older albums as their choice of music from the band, but it doesn't matter really. it's all good stuff!!!

okay, so here is the tunes!!! skipping their self titled debut i'm going straight to their second lp called Static Prevails, then next is the amazing and old school fan favorite Clarity, and last is their major label breakthrough Bleed American. here is a little short history for ya!!! bleed american was released right during 911, and was latter change to Jew or self titled. it wasn't until the 2008 remaster that the original title came back. just a thought for ya to think about when jammin' this great music.

This time it's on my own.

Minutes from somewhere else.
Somewhere I made a wish with Lucky Denver Mint.
Hurry go on ahead.
Good things won't let you wait.
I'll catch up when we get home.
At home I'll leave.
A dollar under water keeps on dreaming for me.
You're not bigger than this, not better.
Why can't you learn.

Read the writing on the wall...

last night i went to sleep being creeped out by my own imagination. i rolled over like a burrito and faced the wall which is opposite my bedroom door. i woke up quickly and realized my force field had been shut down due to me turning away. as a child i use to sleep facing the more open parts of my room so i could spot whatever monster was gonna kill me. this was my defense against the fright of the inevitable and darkness. good thing i had a glowworm to light up in case things got wicked. this story reminded me of the Squee comics by johen vasquez. squee did the same exact thing, he rolled over in his sleep and woke up realizing he had his back turned and was facing the wall. when he slowly turned around he saw a monster. ha ha

well i didn't see 2012 last night. i chose to go to a concert instead. the concert would have been great if i actually did go... i changed my mind again and just stayed home playing call of duty. i later went to my best friends which is always a treat and we just hung out. every time i go there i seem to learn a bit more about myself and life in general. i guess its from seeing him being married and having children. he is totally different than what i remember from back in our high school days. it's interesting to watch how this is working. maybe it's for the best that i see all of this now because it is definitely preparing me for those kinds of future decisions i know i will have to make. i just hope that i make the right ones...

i feel a bit nostalgic today, so here is an older band that almost everybody out there knows. they were one of the most talked about live acts during their prime in the 90's. their political opinions were at the top of many debates and they released stellar albums that became better than the last. here for you all to enjoy is: Rage Against the Machine.

this band formed way back in 1991. lead singer zack de la rocha use to sing for the hardcore band Inside Out which were freekin' awesome by themselves. that band made a song called "rage against the machine" and thus the song became the band name here. guitarist tom morello and bassist tim commerford with drummer brad wilk joined zack and made rock history.

the music created by these guys was not heard of that much outside the underground, or at least until the majors got wind of it. some other bands out there were doing a bit of the same thing, but none were as good as rage. i'm of course talking about the rap-rock thing. yes, this band is what i consider the best rap-rock band in existence. better than Korn and definitely better than Limp Bizcuit. those clowns couldn't hole a candle to how awesome and superior rage were and are. i actually hate to lump those bands in with rage since i don't even consider them to be in the same category. rage, like the Deftones, were their own thing and untouchable. many imitators, but none who knew how to do it with such passion for the music and the subjects at hand.

sadly the band broke up before i got to see them in their prime. i remember the MxTxVx music awards show were they blew the roof off the house, but lost to limp bizcuit in the hard rock category. it was total bs, but whatever. they came on and just did their thing and then left. well, bassist tim did jump onto a piece of the scenery and made limp bizcuit look like a bunch of douche bags, but whatever. it was after this that they played some final shows and then broke up. it wasn't until 2007 that i got my wish to see them play live. they re-united at Coachella: Valley and Arts Festival 2007 in indio california to rave reviews and 70,000 people. i was one of them and let me tell you, it was quite a show. first off it was the biggest crowd i have ever been in and second i was three full days deep into a weekend of music before they took the stage on the last day. it was amazing and the crowd exploded like an atom bomb as they opened. one of the few events in my life i will always remember.

so like i always say, with that here is the music!!! first album listed here is the self titled debut. this is the one that started it all. be sure to listen to the song "freedom". the music video was all about political prisoner leonard peltier, who all native americans know. the second album is my personal favorite. it's called Evil Empire. it's just solid through and through. the third album is what many consider to be their best, The Battle of Los Angeles. and last but not least is Renegades. this is an album made entirely of covers with the exception of one new song. it showcases how diverse this band really was and how they could make older songs even better with their own style thrown into it. so here ya go, the epic rage against the machine post. if you haven't yet, get into it!!!

Here's Something Cool...

i just found a link to this totally awesome site that has a bunch of youtube videos on it. when you play them all in whatever order you get this wall of sound that's very much post-rock!!! crazy the stuff you find on the net sometimes huh???

http://www.inbflat.net/

try it out!!! don't be scared!!!

Okay...

sooooooo today is thursday and once again i have nothing much to say. it seems that i only post blogs in order to keep up the posting numbers, but in reality i really am trying to just write each and everyday. i graduated from college with a bfa in creative writing, so i think i should at least try to keep up with that original plan. i still have a goal to write a novel and get it published sometime in the future. everything else is in front right now, so my writing is having to take a back seat at the moment. i hate to do that because each and everyday i could have been writing something for that book, but i always pass it up in order to do something else. i also could be working on the final stages of my powwow outfit, but i pass that up as well... ugh. i'm always missing something special in life. i won't pass up on anything anymore!!! like this weekend for instance. i believe me and my mother are possibly getting together to watch that movie 2012. yeah, so that will be silly and cool at the same time. i just hope it all works out well.

i know that i have many obligations on my plate to finish. i need to write my novel, i have to keep subbing and get that experience in order to become a full fledged teacher, i also need to finish my fancy dance powwow outfit as well as spend important time with my family. yep... lots and lots to do and i'm still young so it's not like i can't do any of it.

i want to add another post in the letter "o" section, so here is a classic 90's emo band that most of you have never heard of. the little i know of them is this: they were from kalamazoo, michigan around 1993-1995. they toured a little outside their state in the summer of 1994, but mostly just played local shows. they were called Ordination of Aaron.

like most of those more obscure 90's emo bands, these guys are not known that well outside their local scene, but still today we have their entire discography for you!!! Ordination of Aaron: Complete Works. it's really good stuff right here. the sound is what i expect from the 90's emo/indie world and it's great. please note that most of these bands were not the best musicians, but the heartfelt passion is there in full force and that is way more than nothing. enjoy!!!

you gotta go elsewhere for this...

now it's time to work...
